Celebrating Northlands Tamariki Conference

Celebrating Northlands Tamariki Conference Celebrating Northlands Tamariki Conference

In 2005 a group of Northland early childhood teaching professionals identified a gap in ongoing engagement in professional learning from teachers within the early childhood sector in Te Taitokerau. They determined at the time that a Northland focused conference needed to be held that was both affordable and accessible to all involved in the wider ece sector in order to grow their professional know

ledge. From here the Celebrating Northland’s Tamariki conference committee was formed by this group of inspirational leaders within the early childhood community. The now biennial conference and all that goes with organizing it, is done so on a voluntary basis with representatives on the committee from the Ministry of Education, Northland District Health Board, Northland Kindergarten Association, Educare Early Learning Centers, Avenues Educare, Te Tari Puna ora O Aotearoa, Open Polytechnic of New Zealand, Toka Totoro is the conferences kaumatua. The aim of the biennial conference is to provoke learning and engagement with teachers in all aspects of their mahi (work) and it is with this in mind that we have chosen for this year’s theme, the three pillars of sustainability in an educational context.

Another incredible workshop at our conference on Saturday 8 October.

Drumming with Ross Angell.

Ross started kit drumming at the age of 9 and warmed to the drums instantly. His teacher inspired him, and he loved the challenge of new rhythms and coordination even if it was
very hard work. In his late teens, he found the djembe and darbuka both types of hand drums. He travelled and always seemed to find drumming opportunities wherever he went. In 2008 when he studied and dedicated himself to learning west African drumming.

Ross has been teaching children’s classes and workshops since 2015. He has worked with young children from Oruaiti school, a
kindergarten in Kaitaia, a home school group for 5- to 8-year-olds, a playgroup, Doubtless Bay Kindergarten and also Kaitaia College.

To explore drumming and many more amazing workshops that will revitalise your sense of creativity register now. Early bird pricing is only available for a very limited time and will end on 16 September 2022.

Another of our amazing conference workshops.

Carpentry is a chance for adults to scaffold children’s knowledge and skills around tools and materials; it is a chance to extend children’s interests, and support children’s urge to create and
express themselves.

Peter will show you:
 How to support children’s use of tools and materials so that children can accomplish their
goals,
 Some child-friendly tools and materials
 how to create a rich multi-medium carpentry area
 how to create your own carpentry work of art

Bio
Peter has always loved to build and create. He grew up on a farm in Whanganui with easy access to a workshop with basic tools, materials galore and lots of neighbourhood friends and brothers to make huts and go-carts with. He has worked for ten years at the Campus Creche in Hamilton with all ages of children, then eight years as a lecturer for Te Rito Maioha in Christchurch, two years in a Kindergarten in Kaitaia and finally 11 years at Far North REAP as the ECE/Kohanga support person. He lives in Peria in his self-built earth house, tilling the land, playing music and making things.

Another exciting workshop confirmed for this year's conference.

Dramatic Play 101
Remember when you got lost inside imaginary games? How do you nurture that type of dramatic creative play in uninspired or reluctant children? What’s needed to bring a story to life? How do you get ideas flowing and build characters that you can step inside? The most important thing is to enjoy yourself.

By using simple drama exercises that build confidence and encourage spontaneity, Polly Greeks demonstrates ways for people of all ages to have fun with creative story-telling; creating plot, introducing action, incorporating dialogue and being courageous in a supportive environment.
