🚒 MEET THE CREW – MIKAELA COOPER 🔥
This week, we’re introducing Mikaela Cooper, Operational Support Firefighter 👩‍🚒
Mikaela has been part of the Kawerau Volunteer Fire Brigade for 3 years, and what has kept her involved is her passion for serving and supporting our community. ❤️

When it comes to staying calm in high-pressure situations, Mikaela says it’s important to go back to the basics – pause, breathe, assess the situation and then work out your approach.

Her most rewarding part of being a member of Kawerau Fire Station?
❤️ The support from the community and the family you build as part of the crew.

🏠 Mikaela’s fire safety tip:
Check your smoke alarms! Make sure they’re working properly and replace batteries or alarms when needed, if your in doubt you can contact the Kawerau Fire Station. And remember in case of an emergency dial 111. 🚨

🚒 MEET THE CREW – COLE HENDL 🔥

This week, we’re introducing Cole Hendl, Firefighter 👨‍🚒

Cole has been part of the Kawerau Volunteer Fire Brigade for 2.5 years, and what keeps him involved is simple – serving and helping our community.

When it comes to staying calm in high-pressure situations, Cole has two things covered:
☕ Caffeine and the support of the crew he’s working alongside! 😂

His favourite part about being a member of Kawerau Fire Station?

❤️ Getting to help the community.

🏠 Cole’s fire safety tip:
Take some time to sort out a family escape plan for your home. Make sure everyone knows two ways out of each room, where to meet once outside, and what to do if the smoke alarm sounds.

Last night, we were delighted to welcome Clare and Richard from New World Kawerau to the Kawerau Fire Station. After a quick tour of the station and a few photos, Clare presented our brigade with a generous New World gift voucher.

We would like to say a heartfelt thank you to Clare, Richard, and the team at New World Kawerau for their kindness and ongoing support of our brigade.

A special thank you also goes out to our incredible Kawerau community for voting for us. Your support means so much to our volunteers and helps us continue serving our community.

🧯School Holiday Safety Tips🧯

As we head into another two weeks of school holidays filled with fun, adventures, and quality time with the kids, grandkids, mokopuna, teenagers, and whānau, we'd like to share a few simple reminders to help keep everyone safe at home. 🔥❤️

- Charge tablets, iPads, phones, laptops, and other devices on a hard, flat surface—not on beds, couches, or under pillows.

- Make sure electric blankets have been checked before use and avoid leaving them switched on for long periods or while unattended.

- Don't overload multi-boards with too many appliances or power cords.

- Keep matches and lighters well out of children's reach.

- If the kiddos want to help cooking a meal, ensure they are not left unattended in the kitchen.

- Make sure your tamariki know how to call 111 in an emergency, and ensure everyone in your household knows your family's fire escape plan and meeting place.

🚒Meet the crew in the Volunteer section of Kawerau Fire Brigade! 🚒

Behind every callout is a dedicated team, which some are volunteers who are committed to serving and protecting our community!

Over the coming weeks, we'll be introducing you to the volunteers behind the uniforms, sharing their stories, what inspired them to join, and what being part of the Volunteer section of the Kawerau Fire Brigade means to them.

First up is Station Officer/ OIC Ken Russell! ❤️🔥

What is your name and rank?
“Ken Russell, Station Officer/OIC”

How long have you been a member in the volunteer section of Kawerau Fire Brigade and what has kept you involved?
“28 and a half years. What has kept me involved is the passion of people, and serving the community”

How do you stay calm in high pressure situations?
“I stop, think and look at the situation before overreacting.”

What is the most rewarding part of being a volunteer firefighter in Kawerau?
“Protecting the community and seeing the people who joined the brigade go up through the training ranks and becoming more professional firefighters”

Whats some fire safety advice you would give to Kawerau Residents this winter?
“Be vigilant. Make sure your chimney is cleaned and check your fire place before use. Do not cook unattended ”.

What advice would you give to someone whos thinking of joining the Volunteer section of the Kawerau Fire Bridage?
“Give it a go, have a think about it, come down to trainings and have a look at what we do and what you would be getting yourself into. Mix with people and ask questions”

Everyone at the Kawerau Fire Brigade would like to congratulate Sharice Herd and Mikaela Cooper for completing their 2 day - long, Operational Support Firefighter Course at FENZ National Training Centre! Sharice and Mikaela are both huge assets to the brigade and we are all super proud of them! Congratulations, ladies!

From the Kawerau Fire Brigade we pass on our sincere condolences to the whanau and friends of Malcom James Campbell who passed away peacefully yesterday after a short illness.

A loved husband, father, koro, businessman, staunch supporter of the Kawerau Emergency Services and community and long serving Mayor.

A celebration of Malcolm's life will be held in the Kawerau Town Hall on Wednesday 27th May at 11am followed by a private cremation.

Our thoughts are with the Campbell whanau ~ RIP Malcolm
