Lake Tekapo Solar System Challenge

Lake Tekapo Solar System Challenge A free outdoor learning adventure - experience the vast scale of our Solar System This is built to scale for the large model Solar System.

Two scale model Solar Systems:
one you can negotiate on foot
one spread throughout the Mackenzie High Country of New Zealand. The centerpiece is a 13.92-metre diameter Sun with an interactive tile mosaic Sundial. At this scale the nearest star to our Sun would be on the Moon. The project is a work in progress, currently awaiting the spring thaw to continue. This page is also a work in progress, and will largely consist of a photo album documenting our progress.

Phase 0 album is only just started. The Phase 1 album is almost complete for now. Phases 2 and 3 are the planet stations for the two scales of the Solar System.

I am busy now for several days with other commitments so don't expect any change for at least a week or so.

My thanks to those of you who have already discovered this page, as I work, and liked it! I hope you will come back and have another look, just so you have seen everything I have posted to date. The story will be entirely told in the comments with the photos in each album.

Again, thanks.

This is Phase 1 of the project so far. It won't complete until summer(hopefully), that's January or February here in the southern hemisphere.

Well, that was optimistically written a couple of cold winters ago. Since then there were several unforeseen delays, not to mention the mess made in the domain by the new Tekapo town development. We have had to stop work on the ground until it settles down.

However, there has also been progress behind the scenes. Phase 1 is ready to go, just probably having to wait now for the ground to thaw in the spring. Three signs describing The Project, how to use The Sundial, and The Sun are ready to be concreted in, and then landscaping the area around the stonework will be done.

I will shortly be adding a few more photos to the Phase 1 gallery, to show the steps in completing the top layer, the "face" of the sundial with the stone masonry and the mosaic kea.

Work on Phase 2 is also being advanced with finalizing the individual "Planet Station" signs. So do stay tuned.
