🏑 Next week, we’re looking forward to welcoming teams from across the Lower North Island for the Lower North Island Secondary Schools Boys (Tier 4) Hockey Tournament.

Nine visiting teams will join Horowhenua College at the HHA - Horowhenua Hockey Association turf from 31 August to 4 September for a fantastic week of competition.

✨ Five ways to spend Matariki in Horowhenua

Matariki is a time to pause, reconnect and spend time with the people who matter most. However you're celebrating, here are five simple ways to make the most of the long weekend.

Look up at the stars

Rug up and head out after dark. Low light pollution makes spots like Waitārere Beach and Lake Punahau perfect for stargazing.

Celebrate together

Join Matariki ki Ōtauru in Shannon on Friday, or explore the Taitoko Night Market on Saturday for kai, culture and community.

Share good kai

Pick up a fresh loaf of Rēwena bread and other treats from The Baked Dane (today until 3pm), and gather around the table.

Embrace winter

Take on a mid-winter dip with the locals at Waitārere Beach, then warm up in the sauna on Sunday.

Catch a west coast sunset

Grab fish and chips from Foxton Beach and watch the sun sink into the Tasman Sea.

🚚 Pop Up Eats is on at the Levin Mall carpark from 5pm, with plenty of tasty options.

🍕 Or make the trip south for pizza night at Manakau’s Famous.

School holidays are hard enough. Let someone else do the cooking tonight.

If the kids are climbing the walls already... we've got a suggestion. 😉

Pack the scooters, throw a ball in the boot, grab a takeaway coffee from Salty Brews and head to the Waitārere Domain.

There's plenty of room to run around, courts, skate park, towering pine trees, and the famous big slide that's been testing kids' bravery (and parents' nerves!) for generations.

The beach is only a couple of minutes away too, if you're up for stretching the legs even further!

Celebrate the Māori New Year at Lights over Te Awahou – an evening of light, music, kai and community in the heart of Foxton.

Bring the whole whānau along to wander through light installations, enjoy live performances, grab a bite from the food trucks, and soak up the atmosphere as we celebrate the arrival of Puanga together.
