Horowhenua is a place that is awakening to its potential. Boasting the shortest distance in Aotearoa from mountains to sea and host to the only perpendicular dune system in the world, Horowhenua has long been valued for its unique and fertile whenua. Horowhenua's unique microcosm has given birth to a wealth of food producers, with Horowhenua often referred to as the North Island's vegetable bowl. Home to Muaūpoko, Ngāti Raukawa Ki te Tonga and Rangitāne, Horowhenua has a rich cultural heritage. From stories of the fabled Waitaha people at 7 feet tall, Patupaiarehe or fairy people thought to have inhabited the Makahika Valley, to sophisticated tree forts and warriors said to possess the ability to walk on water – the Horowhenua holds many taonga close to its heart.

This Labour Weekend, round up the whānau and see where Horowhenua takes you. Bring the bikes, discover our stories and settle into a local café and let someone else do the cooking.

There’s a little extra happening, too:

👻 Brave the Haunted Library at Te Takeretanga o Kura-hau-pō on Saturday 24 October, with Family Fright Sessions from 5pm

🌸 Browse the stalls, find a treat and enjoy the buzz of Foxton Springfling. on Sunday 25 October, from 9am

Take home a taste of award-winning Horowhenua 🥛🌱

At Udderly Organic good milk starts from the ground up. Ange and Wayne’s care for the soil, pasture and cows goes into every bottle of creamy organic milk produced on their farm in Koputaroa, just north of Levin.

The team has just picked up five awards at the Electra Business & Innovation Awards including Electra Business of the Year. A pretty special achievement for these lovely locals!
