It’s National Volunteer Week - Te Wiki Tūao ā-Motu! We’d like to thank all our volunteers and our family, friends and employers whose support makes it possible for us to serve our community. But, what better chance to showcase a bit about our volunteers? First up, QFF Lynden Kees, who joined in 2019.

-------
🚒He was inspired by his father who was a volunteer firefighter in Little Wanganui and loved the way everyone got behind the local volunteers. He recalls the legendary brigade Christmas parties! Lynden believed that joining a rugby team was the best way to meet new people but after his body took too much of a hammering, he joined the local fire brigade; the best move he could have made.

🚒Lynden values the fact that fellow brigade members bring different perspectives while always having each other’s backs, plus the banter and the friendly sledging between neighbouring brigades keeps things light-hearted. He enjoys the opportunity to think on his feet while applying a bit of classic “number 8 wire” ingenuity to solve problems.

🚒The most rewarding part of being a firefighter is being there for people’s most difficult moments, knowing he would appreciate someone doing the same for his own family.

🚒His favourite piece of equipment is the spreaders, which he enjoys using to dismantle vehicles in a controlled and coordinated way during rescues.

🚒Lynden is a Contracting Manager for Fulton Hogan, jokingly referring to himself as “public enemy number one on Gerald Street.”

🚒He enjoys hunting and fishing and his children are taking an interest as well, so he’s hoping to spend more time outdoors with them.

🚒A special shoutout to his wife, Jess, and their kids. Whenever the siren sounds, they are often left to carry on without him at a moment’s notice. They play a huge part in supporting him, which can be hard on them, so they’re doing their bit too!

Join us in wishing our Lincoln Road Crash Rescue Team (Ollie, Lynden, Andy, Matt, Shaun and Harry) all the best in Feilding where they're competing alongside 16 other rescue teams from across New Zealand at the United Fire Brigades' Association of NZ National Road Crash Rescue Challenge until Saturday.

A couple of the members are new to the team, so a great chance to put practice into play and work together to achieve the next level of patient extrication from vehicles, while under a time restraint.

Go well lads, learn heaps and also thanks to our guys Tim & Eric plus Piggy & Brokey from Lincoln West for spending some time with us training. 🙏

Morning Lincoln! Please do us a favour and flick us a nomination on the Get Snooked post. (Click through to their post, don't comment on this one) We love a good feed, as it gives us the energy we need to respond to over 400 calls a year in the community! Thanks so much :) -AG-

🚒 GIVING BACK TO OUR COMMUNITY 🚒

We're looking to shout a local volunteer fire brigade a feed on us

We know there are amazing volunteers all across Canterbury who dedicate their time to protecting our communities, and we'd love your help choosing where we go next.

👇 Tag a local fire brigade in the comments and tell us why they deserve a burger night from Get Snooked.

Thanks for helping us support the people who support our communities

29 calls for May - thanks again to our families, employers & the community for supporting us in what we do. On top of the 29 calls, congrats to our Skytower climb team for scaling the tower and with lots of local help, raised $18,051 for Blood Cancer NZ.

Now, as we're into Winter, we're all reaching for heaters, fireplaces, and electric blankets to keep warm. But winter is also one of the busiest times of year for house fires.

✔️ Keep anything that can burn at least one metre away from heaters and fireplaces.
✔️ Never leave cooking unattended – kitchen fires remain one of the leading causes of house fires.
✔️ Check your smoke alarms are working by pressing the test button.
✔️ Have your chimney cleaned before regular use.
✔️ Turn electric blankets off before getting into bed and check them for signs of wear.
✔️ Avoid overloading power boards and unplug heaters when they're not in use.

A working smoke alarm can provide the early warning needed to escape safely. Take a few minutes today to check yours – it could save your life.

Stay warm, stay safe, and look after one another this winter. 🔥🏠 -AG-
