This morning, Hutt City Council joined the Filipino community for the first flag raising ceremony outside of the embassy, to celebrate National Independence Day of the Philippines 🇵🇭

Today marks the 128th anniversary of Philippines independence, commemorating 12 June 1898, when the Philippines declared independence from Spain. It was a huge moment of courage, unity, and national pride for Filipinos.

It was also an honour to welcome Her Excellency Kira Christianne D. Azucena, Ambassador of the Republic of the Philippines, alongside members of our Filipino community as we came together to celebrate this important occasion.

The Filipino community is also hosting its annual Philippine Festival this Saturday! Enjoy cultural performances & variety shows, a cultural costume parade, photo and art exhibitions, delicious food, and more! See all the info at hutt.city/philippinefest

We've been busy over the past few months completing improvements to the shared path along the Petone Foreshore 🚶🚴‍♂️

So far we've finished up resurfacing and widening sections through Hīkoikoi Reserve (from Waione Bridge to Lions Park) and west of Petone Wharf, as well as shared path line marking - it's all looking great!

Coming up we're:
▪️ widening the path either side of the Petone Settlers Museum

▪️ adding additional furniture along the foreshore (near Beach Street)

▪️ demolishing the Bay Street Toilets to make way for a new four cubicle public toilet (including a high needs disability changing room!)

▪️ adding wayfinding along path

▪️ adding a new Locky Dock (bike parking) next to the Bay Street Toilets

See below an update on the Queens Drive and High Street intersection upgrade - great progress is being made 🙌

We're making good progress on the upgrade of the Queens Drive and High Street intersection in central Lower Hutt and are on track to open it in December.

Since March, our Alliance contractors have been busy preparing the area for increased traffic once it connects to the new interchange and bridge, removing the old roundabout on High Street and clearing out around 140 metres cubed of asphalt and 1300 metres cubed of underlying materials.

The reason we’ve removed so much material is so that we can relocate or replace underground services like power, water, gas and fibre, drainage and stormwater systems before rebuilding the intersection itself.
The final intersection should have a pavement lifespan of about 25 years. The upgrades beneath the road means this area shouldn’t need to be touched for some time.

If you're driving through this part of Lower Hutt over the coming weeks, you'll see roadworkers laying cabling and infrastructure for the new street and traffic lights that're going here and wrapping up water main works. Once we've finished installing utilities we'll start rebuilding the new road.

This work is part of the wider Te Awa Kairangi - Delivering RiverLink programme. The improved intersections here and at Rutherford Street/Queens Drive will become the gateway to Lower Hutt - connecting directly to the new bridge over the Hutt River.

We know this has been one of the most disruptive parts of the project so far, and we really appreciate your patience. Temporarily closing the intersection is helping us get this work done faster and more safely.

Next year, we're doing a similar upgrade of the Rutherford Street/Queens Drive intersection.

The best way to keep up with what we’re doing is by following us if you aren’t already – we’ll be sharing plenty of photos and videos as we progress – along with subscribing to the programme newsletter: https://confirmsubscription.com/h/t/EED2E40ECF6651D6

📅 Eastbourne: Saturday 27 June
⏱️ Individual 20-minute sessions – just $40 per dog!

4.30pm Kia ora Te Awa kairangi ki Tai Lower Hutt, coastal conditions are starting to improve and while the swell wasn’t as severe as forecast, there’s still a warning in place until 3am tomorrow. Please continue to take care around the coast. Emergency teams are continuing to monitor the situation and are prepared to respond if needed.

NZTA advises that Te Ara Tupua has reopened to cyclists and pedestrians, but care is advised due to strong winds. The Hutt train line and SH2 remained open all day thanks to the new seawall.

Across the harbour, Tupua Horo Nuku has done a great job protecting the Eastern Bays, and the road was not affected.

We’re aware of reports of foul odours in some coastal suburbs. This has been investigated by the Emergency Coordination Centre and Wellington Water. Wellington Water advises that there is no evidence of sewerage entering the harbour at this stage, and the hydrogen sulphide monitor in Seaview has not been triggered. Based on these assessments, they are confident that there are no health risks. The smell may have been caused by river and coastal sediments being stirred up, but this is yet to be confirmed.

⚠️ Rata Street Loop Track Closure ⚠️

Heads up! A slip on the Rata Street Loop Track in Naenae has brought down multiple trees, blocking the lower section of the track near the stream.

For your safety, this section of the track is currently closed and track closure signage has been installed.

Please do not attempt to pass through the affected area and follow all signage on site. We’ll provide updates once the track can be safely reopened.

Thanks for your patience and understanding while we work through this issue 🌳
