Well Homes work with whānau who own their homes, live in private rentals or in Housing New Zealand properties and have or are eligible for a Community Services Card or are low income and are under the care of a health professional because there are children in the whānau with a respiratory condition or the health of the whānau is at risk due to cold, damp housing.

There are some hui that stay with you long after they finish, and our time with Te Paepae Arahi was one of them 💛

Well Homes were honoured to be invited in to share the Well Homes and Tiaki Mahana kaupapa with both staff and whānau. What unfolded was more than just a presentation, it was real kōrero, genuine connection, and shared understanding.

As we spoke about the realities many of our whānau face, cold homes, overcrowding, mould, high power costs, and the impact this has on health and wellbeing, there were so many moments of acknowledgement around the room. These weren’t just stories being told. These were lived experiences, seen and felt by many of the people sitting there with us.

That is the power of kanohi ki te kanohi connection. Creating safe spaces where people can speak openly, be heard, and know they are not alone.

The staff and whānau at Te Paepae Arahi welcomed us with aroha and manaaki. The whanaungatanga throughout the hui was beautiful, and the feedback afterwards reminded us how important these conversations are for our communities.

What made this hui even more special was the shared passion to continue walking alongside whānau together. Te Paepae Arahi are eager to collaborate and connect whānau into Well Homes and Tiaki Mahana so we can continue supporting warmer, drier, healthier homes and reducing the pressures many families are carrying.

This kaupapa has always been bigger than housing. It is about people. It is about health. It is about dignity, connection, and ensuring our whānau feel supported every step of the way.

An awesome hui, powerful kōrero, and the beginning of a relationship grounded in collaboration, trust, and a shared commitment to tautoko our whānau and communities 🤝🏽

Well Homes and Tihei Rangatahi were invited to present to Resident Medical Officers (junior doctors) working across hospitals and GP practices in our region, including Capital Coast, Hutt Valley and Kenepuru.

The presentations were held at Kokiri Marae, grounding the learning in community and connection.

This opportunity was led by their kaiako, Dr Jake Aitken, who is integrating cultural training across the health system to strengthen the way doctors care for our communities.

We shared the kaupapa of our services and the realities we see every day, supporting whānau in their homes and communities.

Often, clinicians see patients in hospital or in clinic, but don’t always see the conditions many whānau are living in. The home environment plays a significant role in health outcomes.

This highlighted the need to look beyond the illness and understand what whānau are returning home to, encouraging early referral into Well Homes while connecting our youth with support through Tihei Rangatahi.

The environments our whānau live in matter, and conversations like these help strengthen the way care is delivered across our communities!

Well Homes wants to acknowledge the incredible mahi of Tihei Rangatahi and the impact they continue to make for our rangatahi and wider community 🤩

Over the school holidays, we had the privilege of spending time with their team and seeing their programme in action. It was awesome to witness the energy, care, and intention that goes into creating such a safe and fun space for our young people.

Their holiday programme uses a “mana points” system, where rangatahi earn points through positive behaviour, participation, and effort. At the end of the programme, those points turn into mana dollars, and the kids get to shop at the Tihei shop, filled with toys, goodies, clothes, books, and more.

Such a cool way to celebrate our rangatahi and acknowledge the good they bring 🤗

Tihei Rangatahi is a FREE Youth programme offering both after school and holiday support, with a wide range of activities including sports, art, music, tech & digital arts, and radio.

They also offer a range of Youth programmes including Hā Whakata, Ngā Pōtiki, Te Waharōa, and Mauri Ātea, each designed to support rangatahi at different stages of their journey, building confidence, strengthening identity, and creating positive pathways.

Tihei Rangatahi work alongside local schools, health providers, and key services such as Whānau Ora, Vibe, Youth Justice, Well Homes and other community partners, supporting rangatahi through a holistic, wraparound, whānau centred approach that supports their overall wellbeing 😍

Well Homes had the absolute privilege of spending time with the beautiful rōpū Te Mauri, where we shared and presented our Well Homes and Tiaki Mahana programmes.

Te Mauri is a truly special kaupapa, supported by Kōkiri Marae Health and Social Services and delivered by the Mana Wāhine team. It provides a safe, nurturing space for whānau Māori experiencing cancer, alongside their wider whānau and support people, to come together, share their journeys, and uplift one another.

Grounded in mātauranga Māori, Te Mauri is guided by whakapapa, pūrakau, and kaitiakitanga. It recognises that healing is not just physical, but a wairua journey supporting whānau through connection, understanding, and transformation toward mauri ora.

It was humbling to sit alongside this incredible group, hearing stories, sharing kōrero, laughter, and even tears. Spaces like this are so important, where whānau can feel safe to express themselves and simply be, while also enjoying kai together.

Te Mauri continues to walk alongside whānau at all stages of their cancer journey, from early concerns and diagnosis through to treatment and beyond. The rōpū runs fortnightly, rotating between Pito-one (Whare Raumati, Hikoikoi) and Porirua (Mary Potter Hospice, Ranui Heights).

We are so grateful to have been welcomed into this space and to share how Well Homes and Tiaki Mahana can support warm, dry, and healthy homes, because housing is health, especially for our most vulnerable whānau.

If you or someone you know could benefit from this kaupapa, kōrero with your GP or Nurse Practitioner about a referral.

What a great way to finish the week before the Easter break 🐣💛

Our Well Homes team were proud to be at Kōkiri Marae Health & Social Services, sharing our knowledge alongside the many amazing services across Kōkiri.

It was a great opportunity for staff to learn more about each service, hear updates, meet new kaimahi, and strengthen our connections across the wider team 🤗

To make the day interactive, staff went around to each service and completed a question sheet, helping everyone engage and learn more about the support available, plus go in the draw to win some awesome prizes 🤩🎁

A fun and valuable way to connect, learn, and celebrate the amazing mahi happening across our organisation.

Wishing everyone a safe and happy Easter break with your whānau 🍫🐰

Over the past month, Well Homes flyers were included in more than 250 Kokiri Marae Pātaka Kai food parcels, helping spread the word about our FREE Well Homes service supporting tamariki and whānau to live in warmer, drier, healthier homes.

We also had a Well Homes display set up next door at the Kokiri Marae Whare Kākahu, the pre-loved clothing store where all pūtea goes back into the Pātaka, supporting whānau across the Hutt Valley in need of kai.

Ngā mihi to everyone involved in helping us reach more whānau in our community. Together we can keep our homes warm, dry, and healthy. 🏡

If you know any whānau with tamariki aged 0–19 who may need support, please reach out to the Well Homes team.
