A Restricted Fire Season will come into effect Wednesday 11th December from 1am for the areas of Selwyn District, Christchurch City including Banks Peninsula, Waimakariri District, Hurunui District and Kaikoura District.

The means you will need to apply for and be issued a permit to light any fire in the open air.

We know this will not come as a shock to many, the weather is getting drier and no significant rain forecast for the Canterbury District. We have not met the threshold required to implement a Prohibited Fire Season yet but we are watching the weather and fire danger daily.

You can apply for a permit on our website www.checkitsalright.nz. Once you have been issued your permit, there will be conditions on there that you MUST meet. One of these conditions will be to call our Communications Centre to notify them of your fire before you light it.

Our crews have been working extremely hard over the past couple of weeks but especially the past few days, they need a break. So please consider if you really need to light a fire this summer, or if you can hold off until cooler conditions return in Autumn.

We will post a map of the area the restrictions will affect later today.

🌿 Tūī Sighting in Heathcote! 🌿

Exciting news, Port Hills' locals! Just look at this amazing snapshot by Lauren, daughter of Bianca Sullivan 📸—a tūī has been spotted in the valley! 🐦 Could this special visitor be a sign that our conservation efforts, like trapping predators and planting native trees, are starting to pay off? With every trap laid and every tree planted, we’re creating a safe and inviting space for native birds to explore.

But remember, tūī have high standards! Just like us, they’re only visiting until they’re sure it feels like home. So, this might be their “open home” viewing of Heathcote before deciding to settle in! 😉
Let’s keep up the great work—from predator-free efforts to community planting days—every action brings us closer to a thriving, bird-filled valley. Keep those binoculars ready, and who knows what we’ll spot next! 🌱✨

They may look lovely but they are a really invasive w**d in NZ.

💮 Lupins may attract visitors to Waitaha/Canterbury, but this destructive exotic w**d does significant damage to our native landscape.

The Lindis Pass Conservation Group is on a mission to eradicate lupins in this area.
