🔥 This Week’s Brigade Spotlight 🔥
Meet Justin Smith – Senior Station Officer 👨🚒
This week we’re shining the spotlight on Justin, one of our Senior Station Officers who plays a key role in leading our crew and keeping things running smoothly on station and at incidents 👏
👨🚒 How long have you been part of the brigade?
I’ve been a volunteer firefighter for 31 years, and I joined the Mamaku Brigade 4 years ago.
☺️ What inspired you to join in the first place?
When I was an apprentice, my foreman was a volunteer firefighter and encouraged me to come along and check it out. I got hooked straight away especially the idea of riding in a fire truck and the adrenaline that comes with the job.
🧯Looking back on your time as a firefighter, what’s a moment that stands out as especially rewarding or memorable?
Competing in hose-running competitions stands out. I competed for 5 years and loved the atmosphere. It also gave me the chance to travel around the country and meet other firefighters.
⛑️ Was there a point where you realised this was more than just a phase and something you wanted to commit to long-term?
Yes—after attending my first MVA (motor vehicle accident). That experience made me realise I truly wanted to be there to help people in their time of need.
🧯What keeps you coming back. beyond the sirens, snacks, and a bit of chaos?
The sense of camaraderie and belonging to such a great organisation's keeps me coming back.
💥What do you enjoy most about being part of the Mamaku Brigade?
Mamaku Brigade has become like a family. We’re a tight-knit crew, and it’s reassuring to know we always have each other’s backs, no matter what.
🔈In your view, what makes your crew such a great team to work with?
The willingness to learn and the drive to improve. Everyone is always looking to expand their knowledge and be better.
🙋♀️Outside of firefighting, what do you enjoy doing to relax or recharge?
I keep pretty busy outside the brigade. I own a business, Lakeside Paint and Panel, and enjoy spending time with my wife. I’m also a member—and Vice President—of the Red Knights International Firefighters Motorcycle Club NZ3. On top of that, I’m involved with the Auckland Provincial Fire Brigades Gold Star Association as Junior Vice President, and I’m an Executive Member of the K55 Firefighters Support Charitable Trust.
🔥What would you say to someone considering becoming a volunteer firefighter?
It’s not just a hobby—it’s a lifestyle. It’s one of the most fulfilling things you can do as a volunteer, and the friendships you build along the way will last a lifetime.
