New to the Library:
We have books 1-6 of the Colonial series by Peter Watt. Historical Fiction.

1 The Queen's Colonial (2018)
2 The Queen's Tiger (2019)
3 The Queen's Captain (2020)
4 The Colonial's Son (2021)
5 Call of Empire (2022)
6 The Ghosts of August (2024)

This series will be labelled by the series name and book order e.g Colonial Bk 1. as the stories are told in chronological order and the author has other series - the label helps us shelve them together.

Does Literary guarantee a good book ???

I am always puzzled by the literary label - I have even looked up the definition in the past " A literary book (often called literary fiction) is a work that focuses on deep character development, fine writing style, and complex themes about human life rather than a fast-moving plot. Instead of following standard genre rules like mystery or romance, these books explore inner thoughts and big ideas."

My thoughts are that there are books which are not labelled literary that could very well be described as such.

It is interesting that books I was buying for their " literary " label were the least read by our members and are often culled under the three years 'not read' criteria. I do buy books from the award winning lists - not because of their literary label, but because they have reviewed well and have a wider interest beyond the "L" label.

Nordic Noir
Don't be put off by the length - many characters, a couple of plot lines, a slow start but riveting to the end. Read it in two sittings or lie- ins !!
