Healthy Families South Auckland

Healthy Families South Auckland Creating healthier communities in the places where people live, learn, work, and play.

Healthy Families NZ was set up by the Ministry of Health to address the growing health inequities and increasing number of people impacted by preventable chronic disease in New Zealand. The approach is about understanding the systems that affect health where people live, learn, work and play. The focus is on building strong partnerships across these places to create the changes that can collective

ly improve the health of communities. The major investment is in a workforce that will be responsible for working with local leaders to change the systems that impact on health. Healthy Families South Auckland is the largest of all the Healthy Families NZ. We are based in Manukau city and cover the Manukau, Manurewa and Papakura local board boundaries.

Healthy Families South Auckland and Health Coalition Aotearoa have released two important reports focused on improving access to affordable, nutritious food across South Auckland.

Called “He kai kei aku ringa - There is food in my hands”, the foundation & community reports respond to rising food poverty and highlight community-led initiatives already making a difference.

After a year of research alongside the Māngere community, key actions have been identified. These include changes to planning and zoning, stronger protections around school food environments, funding and regulations, and broader shifts to support a fairer food system.

🎤 Voices from the night

Throughout the launch, we asked people to share their experience, what connection means to them, what whānau conversations can feel like, and why spaces like this matter.

These reflections remind us that kōrero can be powerful, healing, and sometimes challenging, but always worth it. Thank you to everyone who shared openly and honestly. Your voices sit at the heart of this kaupapa.

✨ What a night. What a kaupapa. ✨

We gathered with whānau, rangatahi, and partners to celebrate the launch of Kōrero Mai, a deck of conversation cards designed to support whānau to kōrero, connect, and grow together.

These cards create space for honest conversations, gentle moments of reflection, and meaningful connection, in a way that works for your whānau, at your pace. There’s no right or wrong way to use them, just opportunities to listen, learn, and come together.

We’re deeply grateful for everyone who came along and helped mark this moment with us. This is only the beginning 💚
