Join Rise Together – Alcohol Harm Prevention Workshop, a free, inclusive and culturally responsive community workshop delivered by Sahaayta Counselling & Social Services, in collaboration with Fiji Girmit Foundation New Zealand. he session is open to young people aged 14+, adults, parents, caregivers and community members. We will explore alcohol harm, prevention, early intervention, healthier choices, and the legal and public safety aspects of alcohol use, with insights from a Community Police Officer.

Meaningful korero with Mr. Venkatraman, Editor at Indian Newslink on matters concerning our communities.

The interaction offered a valuable opportunity to look at community matters through different lenses and reflect on how local voices and experiences can receive greater attention.

The exchange reinforced the importance of staying connected to what is happening on the ground and ensuring community perspectives remain part of the wider conversation.

It was a privilege to welcome Superintendent Riki Whiu, Director Partnerships, Tāmaki Makaurau, to Gandhi Nivas Papakura in his new role.

Joining him were Inspector Andrew Lui, Ethnic Responsiveness Manager, and Senior Sergeant Sharon Price, District Family Violence Coordinator, Whāngaia Ngā Pā Harakeke.

We were deeply touched by Superintendent Riki Whiu's passion, vision, and big heart. His genuine commitment to strengthening partnerships and supporting whānau was both inspiring and encouraging. Conversations like these remind us that meaningful change happens when leaders and communities come together with a shared purpose.

We were honoured to host Police Commissioner Richard Chambers, Assistant Commissioner Corrie Parnell, and Acting Waitematā District Commander Matt Laurenson at Gandhi Nivas Te Atatū.

The visit provided an excellent opportunity to share insights into Gandhi Nivas' work, including our partnership approach with New Zealand Police and other agencies to improve safety and wellbeing for individuals, families, and communities.

Strong outcomes in family violence prevention are built on meaningful collaboration across the public and community sectors. We value the opportunity to exchange perspectives, discuss emerging challenges, and explore opportunities to further strengthen our collective response.

We extend our sincere thanks to Commissioner Chambers, Assistant Commissioner Parnell, and Acting District Commander Laurenson for taking the time to visit our service and for their continued leadership and commitment to safer communities across Aotearoa New Zealand.

Addiction is often not about the substance it’s about the emotions a person is trying to escape. Healing begins when we address the underlying trauma, emotions, and experiences rather than focusing only on the behaviour.

A recent RNZ article highlights concerning research conducting by Massey University - Te Kunenga ki Pūrehuroa showing that New Zealand has one of the highest rates of hazardous drinking among people aged 50 and over.

Alcohol-related harm for over 50's can lower metabolism, increase injury risk, interact with current medications, accelerate aging in addition to other bio-psycho-socio-cultural issues.

Awareness is the first step towards prevention. Understanding what a standard drink is, recognising risky drinking patterns, and having open conversations about alcohol can make a real difference.

New Zealanders over 50 get the gold medal for hazardous drinking when compared with eight other countries, an alcohol researcher says.

A biennial intercultural dance competition hosted by the NZ Asia Association. Each item must consists of at least two cultures.
The last one held in 2024 captured 2000 audience that shook the hall at the Victory Convention Centre as they cheered at the top of their voices for the groups competing to win from the pool of $8600 prize money.
