Bird Haven Forest Garden Project

Bird Haven Forest Garden Project If trees were the paint and paddocks the canvas, the Bird Haven forest garden will eventually be the artwork.

This is a collaborative work between the earth and me, my name is Sam Lewry - a New Zealand artist, my creative pathway has finally led me here.

Massive amount of work going on in the paddocks at the moment.

Growth of existing plantings is going well.

Lots of new native plants have gone in the ground recently, path and access ways have been opened up, and the w**d trimmer has been put to good use keeping the longer grass in check.

Spring growth seems to be starting a lot earlier this year.

Once again a huge thank you to Keith and Joanne, local native tree lovers, for supplying so many plants for this project.

Very excited to see things come in to leaf this year.

Station wagon full of natives ready for planting.

It’s been a while since my last post here. Looking at last video, things have grown so much, I must do better at updates.

Today I am feeling completely blown away by this generosity from Keith and Joanne, two people I met at the Manawatu Art Trail quite a while back.

They are utterly committed to planting natives, and are growing so many seedlings and cuttings just to get them out there and in the ground. Their plantings look amazing.

Today I came home with a station wagon full to the brim. I can’t wait to get them in the ground.

Another 200 natives from Awapuni finally going in the ground over the next week, 40 done so far, bit of a delay with the regional council showing up unexpectedly to maintain waterway with utes, digger, chainsaw and chipper. Thankfully they have gone but they have left quite a mess to clean up.

Something new this year, a trial of bare root plants from Appleton’s, 70 went in the ground today. All deciduous, a mixture, and hopefully selected right for the soil and conditions, fingers crossed they will survive and be happy here.

Bealtaine Cottage - Colette’s journey is an incredibly inspiring story on YouTube.
I found this channel during lockdown 2021 and I watched from the beginning. After a particularly dark time, it became the mental push I needed to keep going with my own planting plans here in NZ. Looking forward to seeing the full documentary 💚

It is June 2021, it seems that art has finally led me on to a new creative pathway, I will be continuing to paint and and exhibit in the hope that sales of work will help to fund this - my biggest, most important work, a project that is likely to last the rest of my lifetime. Since moving to Marton in 2017 I have explored many tangents trying to find my way forward here. It has been a strange time but an ah ha moment last week and the ideas are beginning to morph into something cohesive at long last. Updates will begin appearing here soon so please like this page if you feel like following progress.
This is very much in the set up phase so if you have stumbled across this page recently - for now Information about the Bird Haven Forest Garden Project to date can be found on my own art website.
