***UPDATE*** At this stage Fulton Hogan do not have regional council consent for the Matarawa quarry. Greater Wellington Regional Council has requested further information from them and that process is still underway.

The trucks/tractors that have been carting rock along the road over the last couple of weeks have no connection to the quarry. They have consent to take rock from the river - it’s a limited amount and limited time. Not ongoing like the quarry will be. Isn’t the road a mess!? Imagine what it will be like of Fulton Hogan is allowed to go ahead. 😡😢🤬

Some good…and not so good news. Actually, a kick in the guts for the residents of Matarawa. Watch this space.

3 May 2022 An independent commissioner has ruled in favour of the Carterton District Council by declining Fulton Hogan’s Certificate of Compliance application for a quarry in Matarawa. However…

We have been a bit quiet here of late! That doesn’t mean we have given up! We were please to get some news just before Christmas that Carterton District Council had rejected Fulton Hogan’s application. Of course Fulton Hogan objected and the situation is now being reviewed by an independent commissioner. The hearing is on the 23rd of March. Hopefully the commissioner sees how crazy it would be to let this go ahead!

We've just had word - Fulton Hogan have put in their application for a Certificate of Compliance to Carterton District Council, this despite Council telling them a resource consent application would be required. It seems to us like Fulton Hogan are continuing to try and push through with no controls in place like resource consent would allow. Lets hope the Council does the right thing and pushes back on this corporation. We should have more information in the next 20 days.

This is a good example of why we are so concerned about road damage and road safety 😢 Look how far off the road that fertiliser spreader (the yellow truck) has to get to let the FH truck go by! This will be happening multiple times a day. Imagine what happens when pedestrians or cyclists are caught up in this… Imagine how quickly the side of the road is going to break down…. (And then Fulton Hogan get paid to fix it!)

A couple of people have mentioned they have had trouble with our ‘MESA in Action’ email address - it’s [email protected]. You can also message the page to contact us.

Wow! Our flyer has hit mailboxes around Carterton and Greytown and we’ve been inundated with messages of support. It seems it is not just Matarawa Road residents who are concerned about this industrial mining activity in our beautiful rural area! MESA would encourage everyone with concerns to contact Carterton District Council and Greater Wellington Regional Council to outline your concerns and lodge your opposition. Concerns raised include road safety concerns, noise, ratepayers footing the bills for road damage and environmental impacts.

A few people have asked us about the proposed quarry location. You can see the approx. location on Totara Flats Farm marked in pink. The blue circles show a distance of approx. 1km, 2km and 3km from the quarry. Woodside/Greytown residents did you realise how close this open pit mine will be to you? MESA wants to stop the quarry, or at least have some controls in place! Greytown Greytown Village

Imagine having a business deal where you damage something then get paid to fix it! It's a sweet deal for Fulton Hogan that's for sure. When their quarry trucks damage Matarawa Road, they will get paid to fix it through their Ruamaahanga Roads partnership with Carterton District Council. Funded by ratepayers and road users. ? Is it arrogance or something else? Carterton District Council told Fulton Hogan (following legal advice) that a resource consent would be required for the Totara Flats Farm quarry. Last week Fulton Hogan representatives told us they were ignoring the CDC request and would simply be asking for a Certificate of Compliance. Let’s hope CDC gives them a swift kick in the right direction.
