🚒🔥 THROWBACK THURSDAY 🔥🚒

"Please Yourself": The night Smith and Brown's went up in smoke

June 6, 1974.—Fire today completely destroyed the contents of Smith and Brown's furniture shop in Maadi Road, Onekawa. Three appliances and an emergency tender attended. The blaze began downstairs near the front of the shop and spread rapidly to the rest of the bottom floor, then upstairs to the mezzanine floor, office block and store rooms. Windows throughout the store exploded with the intense heat.

Several firemen were treated at hospital for minor injuries. The brigade had the fire under control in 45 minutes. Damage was estimated at $200,000. The fire did have one humorous aspect. The station watchhouse-keeper, on receiving the fourth or fifth call, asked which end of the building appeared to be alight, so that he could direct appliances on a convenient route. To which the caller replied: "Please yourself."

Yes, we know.. firefighting is a serious job. And when the pager goes off, that’s exactly how we treat it.

But being a great team isn’t built only on training drills and emergency calls. It’s built in the moments in between too. The laughs, the harmless pranks, the shared experiences and getting to know the people standing beside you. Those moments build trust. They build friendships. They build the kind of team that has each other’s backs, not just on the fireground, but after the tough calls too.

Because the team that laughs together, stands together when it matters most ❤️🚒
