Plant Hawke's Bay Ltd

Plant Hawke's Bay Ltd We grow Hawke's Bay native plants for the wholesale trade and restoration and revegetation projects. We are open by appointment.

Plant Hawke’s Bay is a wholesale and contract grower of Hawke’s Bay native plants, including locally rare species. The nursery mainly grows bulk revegetation lines for restoration, conservation and landscaping projects. All our plants are eco-sourced from throughout Hawke’s Bay, with seeds and cuttings collected from naturally established populations. We collect from a wide range of sites, so whet

her you are in a high or low rainfall part of the Bay, on hill country or by the beach, we have plants to suit your site. We grow plants in a range of containers: the most economical grade is the Tinus root-trainer, which we use for flaxes, cabbage trees and toetoe. The next size up is the Bomentray, which is used for many shrubby species, and we use planter bags for larger grades. Ecological consultations are also available. The nursery at Waiohiki is open only by appointment. We look forward to hearing from you.

Plant Hawke's Bay Ltd is helping restore the region’s natural landscapes while protecting local biodiversity through its eco-sourced native plant programme. Their dedication to conservation, erosion control and habitat restoration has earned them recognition as a finalist in the Ballance Farm Environment Awards for the East Coast region.

Despite recovering from Cyclone Gabrielle’s devastating impacts, the team remains committed to rebuilding Hawke’s Bay’s native plant population one plant at a time. Congratulations on this well-deserved achievement and ongoing contribution to the region’s environmental future.

Congratulations to Honey Lee Blakeney, the project manager for the Waingongoro Awa Charitable Trust. She whistled up funding for a major planting project at Cabbage Tree Flat, on land owned by the Brightwell whanau. Ezra Brightwell welcomed planters on Saturday. We are proud to be the plant suppliers to this project, and pleased Honey Lee is one of the winners of our planting spade promotion for May. As well as local residents and Trust supporters, Hawke's Bay Regional Council staff Annabel Beattie and Natalie de Burgh helped out on the day too.

Your lawn is worth more dead than alive and Colorado just made it official—the state's Turf Buyback Program is shattering enrollment records by paying homeowners $3 per square foot to rip out thirsty grass and install native landscapes, and in a state where the Colorado River keeps shrinking and summer drought maps look like a wound that won't close, the math finally stopped working for the American lawn. The deal is simple: sign up, commit to removing your water-hungry turf, and the state cuts a check while you plant drought-resistant grasses, wildflowers, and shrubs that actually evolved for high-altitude dry air, so the resulting yard sips water, needs no chemicals, and doesn't turn into crispy brown thatch every August when restrictions hit. For decades the green lawn has been a bizarre status symbol—a non-native carpet kept alive by brute force, garden hoses, and weekend slavery—but Colorado looked at its water future and essentially said we'll pay you to stop, and homeowners are flooding the program because one house goes native, the pollinators show up, the neighbors see the water bill drop, and the psychology of an entire street shifts as the front yard becomes microhabitat instead of a miniature golf course. Every square foot converted is water that stays in the system, every deep native root holds soil, slows runoff, and feeds bees through July without a sprinkler touching it, and in a region where every gallon of municipal water has a real cost, paying people to stop wasting it on Kentucky bluegrass is almost embarrassingly logical. Other states are watching because the buyback model turns environmental necessity into economic incentive—no sacrifice, just a check and a yard that actually belongs where it grows—so save the water, build a habitat, rewild the suburbs: it's not a slogan, it's policy, and it's spreading one ripped-up lawn at a time.

What a fantastic day out at Kaweka Lakes yesterday learning from wetland plant expert Paul Champion! Plants we saw included the flowering Lobelia carens and the tiny red tussock Carex cirrhosa which is nationally endangered.
