From the pages of The Daily Telegraph, May 1976. The caption reads: “A front view of the new McLean State building in Shakespeare Road, Napier, which was opened [20 May] by the MP for Hawke’s Bay, Mr J. R. Harrison.” The building was to have been completed on January 12, 1975, but was delayed due to problems with pile-driving and foundation construction as well as contending with one of the wettest winters on record.

From the pages of The Daily Telegraph May 1976. The photo shows boats moored at the Iron Pot, Ahuriri, and the caption reads: “The new Bridge Street pier, which can accommodate 14 boats, is at left. This pier was recently completed by the Hawke’s Bay Harbour Board and replaces the old floating marina built by the Hawke’s Bay Offshore Game Fishing Club.”

From the pages of The Daily Telegraph May 1976. “Hundreds of children packed Napier’s main street when they welcomed the Wombles. After walking up Emerson Street, the Wombles put on a show for the crowd. Pictured is Great Uncle Bulgaria surrounded by children.”

The Wombles was written by Elizabeth Beresford, who had the idea while walking with her children on Wimbledon Common. Her daughter mispronounced it as "Wombledon Common", creating the idea for the Wombles. Check out the titles by Elizabeth Beresford in our library collections.
