This next photo isnt exactly real old Nelson history but it has a place in the past. It is a photo of the Government Research vessel, "W J Scott" leaving Nelson by the looks of it. My late husband worked on the Scott for several years in the late 70's and early 80's. I understand that the Scott along with the other research vessel "James Cook" were originally the old sea harvesters, belonging to Nelson Fisheries. I had also heard that in its later years it was used in some scenes of Peter Jacksons King Kong. I think it now lies some where at the bottom of Wellington harbour. More information would be appreciated, both on the Scott and the James Cook. Both these vessels were a part of our young families lives.

Having spent many hours in the past at the Queens Gardens, as a youngster myself, later on with my sons, and recently with my grandsons, it is interesting to see how 'The Eel Pond' developed into what it is today. I have been gathering pictures from its past. Feel free to add your own Queens Gardens photos

The Post Boy Hotel, at the corner of Vanguard and Gloucester Streets, was licensed by George Potter in 1868, in a house built in 1866. His widow continued to run the hotel for several years after his death in 1872. The building was condemned by the Licensing Committee in 1930 and a new hotel opened in December of that year, with the name The Club. In March 1939 the name reverted to the Post Boy.

Great to see people enjoying this page. Please feel free to add your own to the collection. Today I am adding a photo that was hanging on the wall of the old house across the road from me when they moved in, he let me scan it. It was taken in 1934 or 1936 from the hill above the top of Sowman Street. The row of trees in the centre is the Brook stream. You can make out a track that will eventually become Rata Street. My street isn't even there yet, just a market garden.
