🌿 Ngāti Koata Receives National Recognition for our Taiao Mahi 🌿

Forestry Minister Todd McClay today congratulated the winners of the 2026 Growing Native Forests Champions Awards at Fieldays, with Ngāti Koata receiving the Mana Whenua Award.

This award recognises the many years of restoration mahi carried out across our rohe. From Takapourewa and Rangitoto ki te Tonga to our awa and whenua, this work is about more than planting trees, it is about restoring te taiao, protecting our taonga, strengthening whānau connections, and creating a lasting legacy for future generations.

This achievement belongs to our kaumātua, whānau, kaimahi, volunteers, rangatahi, and the many partners who have walked alongside us. Together, we continue to uphold our role as kaitiaki for our mokopuna.

Koata taonga, Koatatanga, Koata mana e.

📌Hauora - GPs are your first point of contact for all your health needs. In Te Tauihu, about 18% of whānau Māori are currently not registered with a GP.

Te Kāhui Hauora IMPB, Te Kāhui Hauora o Te Tauihu, Te Piki Oranga, Te Hauora o Ngāti Rārua Limited, Nelson Bays Primary Health, and Marlborough Primary Health Organisation can all work directly with whānau to connect them with a GP in their area. Self-enrolment is also straightforward. The most important thing to us is that all whānau are registered and able to access the services they need.

➡️ SELF ENROLMENT
In Motueka, Mohua, Waimeha and Whakatū, you can start this process through the Nelson Bay Primary Health website.

1️⃣ Go to www.nbph.org.nz/services/find-a-gp
2️⃣ Select a GP
3️⃣ Self-enrol

➡️ If you need support with your enrolment:
In Motueka, Mohua, Waimeha and Whakatū

💚Te Piki Oranga has dedicated Nurses and Pūkenga Manaaki (Navigators to support whānau through this process. Go to the Te Piki Oranga website at www.tpo.org.nz to get started.

💙Nelson Bays Primary Health also have a dedicated Kaiatawhai service to support whānau. To contact this service, simply email [email protected]

We would like to thank everyone who attended the unveiling. It was a beautiful and special occasion shared together with whānau, friends and supporters who gathered to acknowledge this important moment.

'Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi, engari he toa takitini'

This kaupapa would not have been possible without the strength of our partnerships and the collective commitment to restoring and protecting this wāhi. We would like to sincerely acknowledge and thank all those who have walked alongside us throughout this journey, including DOC, Tū Uru Rākau, Kūmānu, Tasman Pine, Friends of the Maitai, the Mountain Bike Club, Trail Saints, Nelson City Council, NMIT Trainee Rangers, Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Tuia Te Matangi, Koata Limited, the Koata Kaitiaki Whenua Team, Koata Trust whānau, and the many Ngāti Koata whānau who supported the very first planting days and continued to contribute throughout the restoration project. Together, we have strengthened our connection to this whenua and created a legacy for future generations. Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou katoa.
