We’re running out of people.

This isn’t a problem unique to one town or one firestation. It’s happening everywhere.

Across our communities, the number of people willing and able to volunteer is shrinking. At the same time, the calls are not slowing down. If anything, they’re increasing. More emergencies. More need. Fewer people stepping forward to meet it.

Inside the firestation, that reality is already here, and being felt in real ways.

The same names keep showing up. The same group of people answering calls again and again. The list isn’t getting longer. The workload isn’t getting lighter. The workforce isn't getting younger.

This isn’t about the future anymore. This is happening right now.
I won’t sugarcoat it. Joining a volunteer fire firebrigade isn't easy, and it takes time. The initial training is demanding. It will interrupt your routine. There will be nights when it’s inconvenient, when it would be easier to stay home, when you question whether you can keep up.

That part is real. But it’s also temporary.

What’s on the other side of that effort is something most people will never experience. You learn how to stay calm when others can’t. You learn how to step into situations people naturally avoid and actually be useful. You gain real skills you use on calls, at home, and in everyday life. And you become part of a group that shows up for their neighbors when they need it most.

It’s rewarding. It’s satisfying. And it makes a difference in your life, and in your community. It changes how you see yourself.

This isn’t about being a certain type of person. It’s not about being the strongest or the fastest. It’s not about having experience or knowing exactly what to do on day one. There are roles for all kinds of people; on the fireground.
What matters is the willingness to step forward and learn. Men and women. Young adults. Parents. People with full-time jobs and other commitments. People who have thought about it before but never took the first step. You don’t need to be ready for the worst right now. You just need to be willing to start.

Because here’s the truth: The calls will keep coming. They always do. It might be your house. It might be your neighbour. The only question is who will be there to answer them. Will it be you?

If this made you stop for even a second, don’t overthink it. Stop by your local firestation. Message them. Talk to someone. Sit in on a drill. Ask questions. No pressure. No commitment. Just come see what it’s really about.

Because the hardest part isn’t the training. It’s walking through the door for the first time.

🔥 Our team dealt with a fire in a rubbish truck last week possibly thanks to a lithium battery that didn’t enjoy being compacted. These things heat up fast and not in the fun way. Please take lithium batteries to a proper recycling point

🔥 Don't bin batteries 🔥

A normal rubbish collection run nearly ended in disaster last week when smoke started pouring from the truck.

Nelson Fire and Emergency met the truck on the road and escorted it to the landfill where the load was safely dumped for investigation.

Thanks to the quick response from Fire and Emergency and our onsite staff, a potentially dangerous situation was brought under control before it could escalate.

However, this was a reminder about how dangerous it can be to put batteries in your rubbish bin. You can dispose of your batteries at our free battery drop off points:

🔥Tonight’s training was all about hoses!🔥

Our crews brushed up on their hose management skills including laying out hose lines efficiently, moving them effectively, and dealing with the occasional burst hose. We also refreshed our knowledge on our pump and operating pressures, because understanding why we do things is just as important as knowing how to do them.

It was an awesome chance for our new recruits to really sink their teeth in… and of course, to sq**rt some water!

🚒 We’re always on the lookout for more volunteers!
If you’ve ever thought about joining the brigade, now’s a great time. Get in touch! We’d love to have you on the team!

The sale of fireworks begins this weekend on Sunday 2 November. If you must purchase fireworks we strongly encourage you to think twice before setting them off.

Here are a few simple precautions you can take to keep your whānau, animals and community safe:

• Be a good neighbour, let people around you know you are setting off fireworks especially if they have pets or livestock.
• Light them in a wide-open space, away from anything that could catch fire.
• Ensure your fireworks are pointed at the sky and won’t end up in anything that can catch fire including buildings or vegetation.
• Have a large bucket of water or hose at hand.
• Dispose of your fireworks safely – soak them in water before you throw them out.

🔥 Congratulations Lucia & Aimee! 🔥

A massive shoutout to our newest recruits Lucia and Aimee, who have just successfully completed their 7 day recruit course at the Woolston Training Centre! 👩‍🚒👏

This full on week of training put their skills to the test from hose work, pumps and ladders to breathing apparatus and other vital incident ground skills. It’s a demanding course, and they’ve both done us proud.

Lucia and Aimee have been training hard with us for over 6 months to reach this point, and we’re proud of their dedication and commitment to serving our community.

Thank you both for stepping up and playing a vital role in keeping Nelson safe. The brigade and the community are lucky to have you!
