What does it really take to build an exhibition?

Join the Puke Ariki exhibitions team at the TUKU: The Work Behind the Work sessions, for a behind-the-scenes look at the thinking, making, and decision-making that happens before the doors open.

This Sunday, the team will be upholstering new cushions, turning old exhibition materials into stools for the TUKU lounge. Come along and see how it’s unfolding.

Session times vary week to week - check out the What’s On section of our website to discover upcoming times: https://pukeariki.com/whats-on

Two reading challenges are coming to Puke Ariki this winter!

For adults and teens, grab a Winter Reading Bingo card and challenge yourself to read something new. Complete a line on your card to be in the prize draw.

And for kids aged 6–12, read across the stars in the Puanga Star Quest. Collect stickers for all 10 stars for a chance to win a prize ✨

Both challenges run 1 June - 31 July. Pick up your cards at Puke Ariki Library or one of the community libraries 📚

This building on Devon Street has worn many identities over the past century.

In the 1920s, it was home to McGruer’s, a popular drapery store. By the 1930s, the building had been transformed into a striking Art Deco style, during a wave of modern architecture that helped shape the look of the city we know today.

Decades later, it evolved again, becoming the Downtown Arcade in the 1980s, and then the Metro Plaza. For many, it was a place of everyday moments - grabbing lunch, meeting friends, or spending time at one of the city’s most well-known spots.

Now, it’s changing once more.

If you've been downtown lately, you'll see demolition is underway, revealing layers of New Plymouth’s main street history, while making way for the future. The redevelopment will open up this part of the Huatoki Stream and create a more connected, vibrant city centre for everyone to enjoy.

What do you remember about Metro Plaza? 👇

As part of TUKU: Open Studio, we’re getting hands on this Saturday 30th May!

If you’ve ever wondered what gelli printing is, join Gabrielle Fawkner, Art Educator, for an introduction to this monoprinting technique using gel plates, acrylic paint, and found materials to build layered images.

Gabrielle will cover the core processes before you move into open making. All materials are provided, and you’ll leave with a set of prints to take home, share, or use in other projects. Open to all — no prior experience needed.

Registrations are essential, click here to register and find out more: https://pukeariki.com/event/E31261D1529
