Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults Taranaki

Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults Taranaki Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults Taranaki is a multiagency approach to safeguarding vulnerable adults at risk of harm within Taranaki

HISTORY

Waitemata Police and DHB ran a pilot program for “Safeguarding Adults from Abuse” program for 6 months from July to December 2016. Its aim was to gather organizations together and work collectively to ensure that adequate supports are in place for the vulnerable adults within the community that came to their attention. It has given a roadmap for a community driven initiative with governme

nt and non-government agencies with the goal of safety for vulnerable adults within our communities. This pilot program came to the attention of a group of local organizations who had experienced similar issues with people that they were working with. In 2017 they created the Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults Taranaki (SVAT). WHO WE ARE

Some of the agencies that are involved with SVAT are:
IDEA Services
CCS, QuinLaw
NZ Police, AccessAbility
Taranaki Women’s Refuge
Taranaki District Health Board
Age Concern Taranaki
Taranaki Community Law Centre
Taranaki Safe Families Trust

WHAT WE DO

Our aim is to safeguard vulnerable adults from abuse and neglect while improving the response of agencies to vulnerable adults who are experiencing abuse and/or at risk of abuse in the Taranaki region. If there are concerns raised:
The case will be assigned to a safeguarding Connector who will:

*Take a person directed and whānau-centred approach
*Determine the immediate danger or harm, and coordinate immediate intervention as required.
*Seek to understand the background and situation of concern.
*Provide a single point of contact.
*Coordinate safeguarding strategy meetings with the individual, his/her whānau and supporters, police, provider and other health professionals.
*Identify and address whānau needs in a holistic way.

"The name Whaikaha - Ministry of Disabled People was chosen because it was very strongly felt by disabled people that they didn't want a ministry that was doing stuff for them. They wanted a ministry that was of them"

Whaikaha – Ministry of Disabled People promises to listen to and empower the voices of disabled people but progress towards transforming lives will take time.

We are looking to run a Keeping Safe Feeling Safe course in New Plymouth tentatively starting the week of 25 July, and running until 20 September. The overall goal of KSFS is to prevent and reduce all forms of abuse, neglect and harm to disabled adults, in particular adults with learning disabilities, whilst supporting individuals in maintaining control over their lives.

If you know someone who would like to attend this course please contact Taranaki Community law by emailing [email protected] by 17th July. Please share this with anyone who would be interested. Taranaki Safe Families Trust Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults Taranaki Tui Ora

Who doesn't love a bacon sammy!

After copping flak for weeks over Taranaki’s slow vaccination roll-out, the DHB is bringing out a new incentive for people to get their Covid-19 jab - a bacon sandwich.

Mōrena Whānau

As we continue into Lockdown level 4, times can be full of stress and anxiety.

Please be rest assured that Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults Taranaki are still here to support our community.
Our SVAT Connector is working hard from home to ensure that our most vulnerable are supported. Although we may not be able to communicate face-to-face, we are lucky to have technology to keep us all connected.

We will continue to take referrals and be the point of call for anybody in the community as needed.
