Coastguard Taranaki

Coastguard Taranaki We are a community based organisation who provide a Marine Search and Rescue service in Taranaki. Our Mission - Saving Lives at Sea

Coastguard Taranaki was was set up during the summer of 1972-73. The Unit began by providing a marine radio service (which they
still do) to all vessels in the area, and using two small jet boats with gradually improving radio coverage, provided coverage for search
and rescue incidents. This was the norm for many years. In 1999 Coastguard Taranaki purchased a 44 foot Waveney Class Lifeboat from th

e Royal National Lifeboat Institute (RNLI) in the UK. In recognition of Port Taranaki’s sponsorship to the Unit over many years, the vessel was named “Westgate Rescue”. After some 25 years service in the UK and a further 12 years service with Coastguard Taranaki, “Westgate Rescue” was sold. Shortly before “Westgate Rescue” sailed from Port Taranaki for the last time, the Unit’s new rescue vessel “Todd Energy Rescue” was
commissioned on 3 November 2012. The vessel’s name recognises the lead sponsor behind the acquisition of this NZ designed and built
AMF 1170 Quick Response Vessel (QRV).

⚓ Todd Energy Rescue Undergoing Major Overhaul ⚓

Our rescue vessel, Todd Energy Rescue, has been taken out of the water for a planned major overhaul to ensure she remains safe, reliable, and ready to serve our community for years to come.

📲 While this work is underway, it’s business as usual for Coastguard Taranaki. Our dedicated Radio Operators continue to monitor marine communications and provide support to boaties, and our crews have Ties Rescue on standby to respond when needed.

🛟 We’ll keep you updated on Todd Energy Rescue’s progress and look forward to welcoming her back on the water soon.

🌙🚤 Now that the evenings are getting dark so early, it’s important that we keep our night training skills sharp.

Last week, our crew were out training on Todd Energy Rescue & TIES Rescue with searchlights, night vision equipment, and infrared equipment to ensure we’re ready to respond when needed.

Stay safe out there Taranaki.

💙Happy Mother’s Day to all of the mums, grandmothers and aunties out there - especially the ones who keep our Coastguard whānau afloat.

To the volunteers who juggle family life with callouts.
To the mothers in our crews, our radio rooms, and our communities.
To the mums who wait up, support, and encourage from the shore.

Thank you for your aroha, resilience and generosity💙

Here come the kids ...

🏊‍♂️🚴 🏃‍♀️ Triathlon returns to Taranaki tomorrow (25 March) with the Sanitarium Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon New Zealand at Ngāmotu Beach.

It's great to have the kids down here giving it a go as they swim, bike and run their way around the course.

With so many aspiring triathletes out on the roads there are a few traffic management conditions to please be aware of:
👉 Ocean View Parade, from Bayly Road to Port Taranaki's East Gate, will be closed.
👉 Other roads around the Port Taranaki and Moturoa areas will remain open, but there may be delays as the competitors make their way around the course.
👉 Ocean View Parade to the Lee Breakwater and boat ramp will remain open, but there may be delays.
👉 Please be patient, follow traffic management directions, and take care.

👏 Thanks for your support.

🥇 Good luck to all the kids taking part - have a great day!

🎉 A big CONGRATULATIONS to Phil and Richard who successfully passed their Qualified Crew assessment today!

👏 Both are incredibly valuable crew members, and they did an excellent job out there. This is a well-deserved achievement and a reflection of the time and effort they’ve put in.

A huge thank you to our skippers and crew who supported them through the process, and those that fed us all after the assessment- we couldn’t do it without you!

📟 Yesterday our crew responded to a callout to assist a vessel with steering failure off Oakura.

💨 Despite strong winds, the team carried out a safe and straightforward tow back to port, with both vessel and crew returned home safely.

Stay safe out there Taranaki!

🚤 The long weekend brought plenty of boaties out enjoying the water, it was great to see so many people making the most of the sunny weather!

📟 On Monday, our crew responded to a call from a vessel needing a tow after running into fuel and battery issues. It’s a good reminder that even when you’ve checked everything and have the right gear on board, things don’t always go to plan.

☀️ With the great weather continuing, if you’re heading out please make sure you:
✔️ Check your vessel before you leave
✔️ Check the forecast
✔️ Wear lifejackets
✔️ Carry two waterproof forms of communication

💙 Stay safe out there, Taranaki!
