Welcome home to Team Zulu including our own QFF Knox (second from the right)!

Welcome home to our Team Zulu who have just returned from Canada, helping fight wildfires in British Columbia 🍁 as part of a joint New Zealand and Australian deployment.

The team has been working on extensive and complex wildfires for the five weeks of their tour of duty. Each is a specialist and was assigned to a different Canadian Incident Management Team, filling roles as Divisional Supervisors, Logistics Section Chief, Safety Officer and Helicopter Coordinator. Our International Liaison Officer has been based in Winnipeg, supporting both New Zealand and Australian personnel in Canada.

Their experiences will strengthen New Zealand’s capability to manage large wildfires at home this season.

Our newest firefighters, FF Bueck and FF Sutch-Coleman received their yellow helmets yesterday at our training night from SSO Francis.

Yellow helmets means these lads are no longer recruits and now qualified to ride the truck and respond to emergencies within our community.

Huge congratulations to our two newest firefighters, FF Bueck and FF Sutch-Coleman. who completed their recruit course over the last 7 days at the National Training Centre in Rotorua!

This course is the result of many months of hard work and training outside our usual training nights.

Well done lads! Looking forward to seeing all the hard work in action 🔥🚒

Last Monday we were joined by Johnsonville Volunteer Fire Brigade for extinguisher training.

We have two recruits (can you spot their lime green helmets?) due to go on their course next month so this was a learning opportunity for them as well as a refresher for the rest of our brigades.

Thanks to Johnsonville for spending time with us! Always good to see you guys 🙂

Newlands Fire Brigade is 100% operated by volunteers 24/7 365 days of the year. Thank you to all of our crew for their continued hard work and dedication to keeping our community safe.

Did you know 80% of New Zealand’s firefighters are volunteer? There is approximately 11,800 volunteer staff. That is a lot of people who sacrifice dinners, family time, date nights, work, sleep and more to ensure their communities have a crew to help out in emergencies.

Thank you to our volunteers everywhere for everything they do!

Call stats for May 2026!

As we get into winter it is getting colder and wetter. Remember to keep your heaters at least 1m away from other items such as walls, couches, clothes airers and beds. And as much as we would love to keep our electric blankets on all night long on these cold nights, these must be turned off before going to sleep or put on a timer to turn off automatically.
