Call stats for May 2026!

As we get into winter it is getting colder and wetter. Remember to keep your heaters at least 1m away from other items such as walls, couches, clothes airers and beds. And as much as we would love to keep our electric blankets on all night long on these cold nights, these must be turned off before going to sleep or put on a timer to turn off automatically.

Wellington Region Emergency Management Office has declared Wellington under a state of emergency as a red rain warning for Wellington is also announced. It’s going to be a very wet afternoon and night, so please plan accordingly and read their notice in full.

7.30am:
Fire and Emergency New Zealand has been alerted to more than 150 weather-related events in Wellington this morning.
The calls relate to flooding, flooding into properties and landslides across Vogeltown, Mornington, Newtown, Berhampore, Kingston, Island Bay and surrounding areas.
Our Regional Coordination Centre has also been stood up in response to the weather.
• If you see rising water, do not wait for official warnings
• Call 111 if life or safety is threatened
• Stay out of floodwater. Trying to drive or walk through floodwater puts your life at risk, and risking the lives of those who come to your rescue.
• Don’t wait for emergency mobile alerts or other official warnings: if you see flood waters trust your sense and act immediately.

Good Morning Newlands.

As you’re aware, it’s a bit wild out there this morning.

Areas in the CBD, especially the city side of Mt Victoria and Basin reserve, have been subject to flooding in the early hours of this morning. Landslides have been reported on properties.

Please drive to the conditions this morning. There will be heavier than normal traffic out there, so please adjust your speed and ensure a safe following distance is kept.

The rain this morning had a significant impact on the Hutt valley this morning. We attended several calls to assist our colleagues in the Hutt this morning and the water levels were indeed significant.

Training night last night was a big one with our friends from Johnsonville Volunteer Fire Brigade at the Johnsonville Rugby Club to do some BA exercises. Firefighters were sent into the building to practice fire attack and search and rescue for our “patients” while their masks were covered to simulate the low visibility during a fire.

Huge thanks to the Johnsonville crew for joining us and to the Rugby Club for allowing us to use their facilities for the night!
