Te Kura ā Iwi o Ōmanaia

Te Kura ā Iwi o Ōmanaia Whaia e koe te iti kahurangi, ki te tuohu koe me he maunga teitei Omanaia Native school was established in 1881 under the Native School Act.

The land was gifted by a collective of tupuna who chose the present school site for the school. Identified paraka whenua significant to the current site are Ahikawariki, Karatia, Te Taraire, Potaka, Tapikitu, Taiwhakapiki, Horotiu and Omanaia. The two principal hapu of the valley Ngati Kaharau and Ngati Hau were leading contributors to the makeup of the school roll. The name Omanaia derives from M

anaia, a tupuna descended from the two kaitiaki who accompanied the great navigator Kupe to Hokianga. Mnaia traversed the valleys of Pakanae, Whirinaki, O ue and stopped to rest in the Taukahawai river not too far from the site of Te Piiti Marae. Manaia partook of food as he sat on a rock at this place and it is known as Omanaia, the place where he rested and ate. Omanaia school defines its vision as ensuring that each child becomes fluent and proficient in Te Reo Maori and the English language and participates in the validation of the Maori body of knowledge. All children will be at ease with themselves to celebrate their cultural uniqueness and appreciate the world of others.
