🐧 Hoiho FINAL CALL: Speak up for the hoiho before 5pm Friday 12 December!

Time is running out. Fisheries New Zealand is seeking feedback on measures to protect the critically endangered hoiho (yellow-eyed penguin) from fishing bycatch, and your voice is urgently needed.

In the last 15 years, mainland hoiho populations have collapsed by 80%. Just weeks ago, another bycatch incident was reported off the coast of Rakiura (Stewart Island). Preventing these deaths is one of the most immediate ways to secure their future.

If you haven’t submitted yet, please join us in calling on Fisheries New Zealand to:

➡️ Implement a full ban on set netting across the entire hoiho nesting range from the Waitaki River mouth in North Otago, through the Catlins, and along the northeastern and eastern coasts of Rakiura Stewart Island.

➡️ Extend this ban out to 14 nautical miles from shore to safeguard hoiho while they forage for themselves and their chicks.

➡️ Reject any proposal for a “Fishing Related Mortality Limit.” No level of bycatch is acceptable for a species this close to extinction.

Submission deadline: Friday, 12 December, 5pm.

📄 Make your submission here:

To those who have already spoken up—thank you. 💛 Every submission brings the hoiho closer to safer seas.

🌊 🧜🏽‍♀️ Protectors of Pūtiki Bay go to High Court to argue rights under tikanga ✊🏽⚖️

Three protectors of Pūtiki Bay are having their day in the Auckland High Court on Monday 29th September to argue that, under tikanga Māori, they were right to put their bodies on the line to stop construction of the Kennedy Point Marina.” now known as Waiheke Marina.

“The appellants acted in accordance with kaitiatikanga - the Māori ethic of guardianship - in taking action led by mana whenua to protect Pūtiki Bay, and in particular the colony of at-risk kororā (little blue penguins) who now live beside the marina.”

Their lawyers, Jessica Reid, Scott Fletcher and Sam Vincent, have appealed the District Court’s findings that their clients are guilty of wilfully trespassing in the marina construction area in 2021.

The case raises the issue of Māori customary rights in the takutai moana (coastal marine area). These rights were extinguished under Labour’s Foreshore and Seabed Act in 2004, before being restored through agreement between National and Te Pāti Māori with the Marine and Coastal Area Act 2011.

Protect Pūtiki spokesperson and appellant Julanne Astarte Luz said: "Under the guidance of mana whenua we were protecting Pūtiki Bay in accordance with kaitiakitanga. No marina should be forced into this taonga. It's loss is not only for iwi, but for the entire Waiheke Island community."

In further proceedings over the marina, last year the Court of Appeal recognised that the Ngāti Paoa Trust Board, which has consistently opposed the marina, should have been notified by Auckland Council of the marina’s resource consent application in 2016.

Court will be in session from 10AM
All welcome, nau mai, haere mai!

🇵🇸 MARCH FOR HUMANITY – SANCTION ISRAEL NOW!
March over the Auckland Harbour Bridge • 13 September

This march is a united call by Aotearoa for Palestine, Palestinian and tangata whenua led and supported by communities across Aotearoa. Our kaupapa is kotahitanga – bringing together organisations and communities in solidarity for this historic march to demand the New Zealand Government sanctions Israel.

Why now? The facts:
• 62,000+ Palestinians killed since Oct 7; ~90% of Gaza’s 2.1m people displaced—many multiple times.
• The UN-backed IPC has confirmed famine—with approximately 514,000 people in IPC Phase 5 (catastrophe/famine), and spread projected without immediate access and ceasefire.
• The ICJ (World Court) issued binding orders to prevent genocidal acts and ensure humanitarian aid, citing a plausible risk under the Genocide Convention.
• The ICC has issued arrest warrants for Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant (allegations include starvation as a method of warfare).

🇵🇸 Sanctions Now. End the Genocide. Free Palestine.
