🐧 Hoiho FINAL CALL: Speak up for the hoiho before 5pm Friday 12 December!
Time is running out. Fisheries New Zealand is seeking feedback on measures to protect the critically endangered hoiho (yellow-eyed penguin) from fishing bycatch, and your voice is urgently needed.
In the last 15 years, mainland hoiho populations have collapsed by 80%. Just weeks ago, another bycatch incident was reported off the coast of Rakiura (Stewart Island). Preventing these deaths is one of the most immediate ways to secure their future.
If you haven’t submitted yet, please join us in calling on Fisheries New Zealand to:
➡️ Implement a full ban on set netting across the entire hoiho nesting range from the Waitaki River mouth in North Otago, through the Catlins, and along the northeastern and eastern coasts of Rakiura Stewart Island.
➡️ Extend this ban out to 14 nautical miles from shore to safeguard hoiho while they forage for themselves and their chicks.
➡️ Reject any proposal for a “Fishing Related Mortality Limit.” No level of bycatch is acceptable for a species this close to extinction.
Submission deadline: Friday, 12 December, 5pm.

To those who have already spoken up—thank you. 💛 Every submission brings the hoiho closer to safer seas.
