Kia ora ! Privileged to be raised by my koroua and kuia surrounded by our ngahere (Bush) and our rongoā I have spent my lifetime getting to know our rakau. I have crafted a collection of authentic māori made rongoā from the abundance of rakau in our beau

tiful valley. I also love making soaps and have a small herd of milking goats whose milk I use for my soaps. I am fascinated by our amazing plants and all that papatuānuku provides us with. Please check out my website if you want to know more about what I do.

It’s a whole year since this programme aired on TV. Such an eye opening experience working with a great crew who know there stuff.
If you know my husband and I you will know that we are the last people who would want to be in front of a TV camera. Proud of us for doing it and super proud of the end result.

Raised on whenua, Joyann turned her rongoā skills and plant love into Soul Time, crafting healing balms. Her husband Barlow gathers the rongoā, keeping tradition alive.

Seems lately that by the time I get to my studio it’s dark outside but that’s ok. Autumn is one of the busiest times of the year for me plenty of tasks to keep me busy. This evening I needed to make some Kawakawa balm for a customer who uses lots of it in their mahi . Grateful for the opportunity to supply them.

You might think from my recent posts and stories that I spend most of my time cooking in the kitchen but really that is only at this time of year when everything it waiting to be harvested, of course once that’s done you need to process and preserve whatever you have grown to sustain your family through the winter months. As I was heading down to my studio this evening I decided that the calendula seeds were ready for harvesting so off I went! There’s never nothing to do at my place. Calendua is one of the plants that I grow to make a beautiful oil that is such a powerful healer. I pair it with Kawakawa & East cape Mānuka oil in my Kawakawa balm. A really healing combination that’s great for any skin irritation and rashes. Eczema, dry and itchy skin that sort of thing. Also fantastic for insect bites and minor cuts and burns.
