Inside practice night last night πŸš’ 🧯 πŸ§‘β€πŸš’
Some reminders about working from heights (not just for Lance and Trent installing new smoke alarms in a home in Otane) and Safe Person Concept when we're out on callouts. There's book work too with Tinica helping Luke sign off some scenarios.

Stark reminder to check your fire alarms.

Stark reminder to check your fire alarms.

Our hearts are breaking today for the family whose lives have been torn apart by the house fire in Mairehau.

It is a tragedy beyond words that anyone, especially children, should have to suffer such loss and trauma.

To our local residents: please, do everything you can to reduce the chance of this happening to you or your loved ones. Working smoke alarms, spread throughout your house, are critical. Check your house now. Check your older relatives and friends' houses. If you don't have enough, or the ones you have aren't working, CALL US. 033321764. We will come and fix that for you, at no cost to you.

If you live with children, or sometimes have children stay with you, test the alarms with them so they know what they sound like. Make sure they know the shortest route from their bedroom to an exit, and also a second route if the first one is blocked. Teach them to get low to the floor, get out of the house fast, and stay out. Teach them to meet at a safe gathering place, like the letterbox.

Our thoughts are with our brothers and sisters from Redwood, Anzac, and Christchurch City stations, the 111 calltakers, and the command and investigation team, who attended this incident. These jobs are hard and heavy, and can weigh on you for a long time.

A sad day for Christchurch. Stay safe whānau ❀️
