CUSTOMER USE GUIDELINES

We welcome your comments, questions and encourage discussion here on our page. Please remember to be polite and respectful with your comments to other users, and council staff responding to your comments and questions. If you have a request for service for council to fix or ‘do’ something, you need to call our team on 0800 734 000. While we’re monitoring comments,

we do not log one-off service requests from comments on our social media pages. When we ask for your feedback in a post or seek submissions as part of a submission process then we may record your comments and supply these to elected members as part of their decision making . That means your profile name, and comment may form part of a council report which will be on the public record on our website in the future years to come, and available to people making requests under the Local Government Act Information and Meetings Act 1987 (LGOIMA). All communication with the council over social media channels is subject to the Public Records Act 2005 as they are considered to be local authority records (as defined in the Act). All responses, posts, comments or any other activity on our page will be collected and retained for as long as is required by their approved records disposal schedule. Access to retained social media posts and responses that are no longer live on the social media channel is through our usual official information request (LGOIMA) process. If you want to share feedback with our elected members, we encourage you to make submissions during consultation processes or reach out to them. Their contact details are available here: https://www.otodc.govt.nz/about-council/mayor-councillors-and-boards

SAVE TIME: TALK TO US FIRST ABOUT YOUR RESOURCE CONSENT

Planning a building project, subdivision or land use activity in Ōtorohanga District? Before you apply for a resource consent or building consent, take these three simple steps to make your life easier:

1. Check the Ōtorohanga District Plan to see the rules for what you can do on your property. Visit www.otodc.govt.nz/district-plan.
2. Talk to an expert if your project is complex.
3. Talk to our Council planning team before applying to find out if you need a resource consent or building consent.

Apply for a pre-application meeting with our team at: www.otodc.govt.nz/pre-application-meeting-request

We can meet with you at the Council office in Ōtorohanga, or talk on the phone or by video, to discuss your proposal. We can help you understand whether a resource consent or building consent is likely to be needed.

A conversation early on can save you time, money and stress. It helps avoid surprises later and can make the formal consent process smoother if one is required.

RECYCLING SUCCESS IN ŌTOROHANGA DISTRICT!

A great result was achieved in Ōtorohanga District Council's chemical and electrical drop-off events this year. Nearly four tonnes of hazardous and electronic waste were collected.

We run these annual events in Ōtorohanga and Kāwhia to help people clear out unwanted hazardous and electronic waste products.

“A goal is to ensure they’re disposed of in a safe and sustainable way," says council's Waste Minimisation Coordinator Jane Shaw.

"We collected over 1.5 tonnes of electronic waste, over 1 tonne of paint, and 507 kg of oils and automotive waste. Another 780 kg of other household waste were collected. This included chemicals, pesticides, batteries, solvents and aerosols."

The electronic waste headed to Echo Tech in Auckland where it was dismantled and processed for recycling. The oils were filtered and cleaned to enable reuse, and paints were solidified for safe disposal. Most of the chemicals were neutralised for safe treatment and disposal.

No ratepayer funds are used in these drop-off events as they are funded by the Government Waste Levy. The table below is designed to give you an indication of what a great success these events were.

REUBEN THE ROAD SAFETY BEAR VISITED ŌTOROHANGA

Reuben the Road Safety Bear came to visit Ōtorohanga last week. He visited more than 100 students at Ōtorohanga Primary School, St Mary’s Catholic School and Kio Kio School, sharing important messages about staying safe in the car, near driveways and around our roads.

Reuben also stopped by the Ōtorohanga Library, where he danced and entertained our preschool tamariki.

If your child brought home a Reuben the Road Safety Bear activity book, take some time to work through it together - it’s a great way to keep the road safety conversation going at home.
