Mōrena koutou!

We’ve had a busy month here at KWTAT with some exciting updates to come.
Mo te rā! we’d like to start this week and take the time to acknowledge the eternally important surroundings and the deity’s that are responsible for them. First up the Māmā and Pāpā of them all and their significance to our mahi in Te Ao Māori terms.

Ko Ranginui me Papatuanuku – Sky Father and Earth Mother

🌌 Ranginui and Papatuanuku are foundational deities in Māori mythology. Ranginui is the Sky Father, while Papatuanuku is the Earth Mother.

🌱 Their embrace created the world as we know it. Ranginui and Papatuanuku represent the connection and balance between the celestial and earthly realms.

🌿 In terms of riparian planting, these deities hold great significance. They symbolize the interconnectedness of land and water, emphasizing the essential unity of ecosystems. Recognizing their importance can inspire us to protect and restore riparian areas, fostering healthy relationships between land, water, and the life it sustains.

Kia kaha tatou - watch this space 👀

The tipu rakau for this week!

Te Puriri (Vitex lucens)

🌿 The Puriri tree is a significant native tree in Aotearoa.
It has glossy, dark green leaves and produces beautiful clusters of red or pink flowers, which attract our Manu.

🌿 The life cycle of Puriri includes the production of berries, which are eaten by birds. This aids in seed dispersal and helps regenerateour Ngāhere.

Why do we replant these taonga?

🌿 Riparian planting greatly benefits from Puriri. Its extensive branching system provides habitat and shelter for aquatic species. Additionally, its presence helps stabilize and protect riverbanks.

Kia pai to wiki whānau!

Our mahi this week:

We are grateful to have had the opportunity to plant trees a Puketona Pa Wetland. These wetlands holds a close connection to the history of Aotearoa ki Te Taitokerau as well as the Waitangi River, and our humble contributions aim to support its health.

A heartfelt thank you to the landowners for allowing us access to do so. We deeply appreciate the privilege of planting in this significant location. Together, we take a quiet step towards nurturing this Puketona Pa Wetland and its vital role in protecting the Waitangi River.

Te tipu rakau mo tenei wiki!

TE TŌTARA!

🌳 Tōtara is a magnificent evergreen tree native to Aotearoa. It is known for its distinctive, reddish-brown bark and dense foliage.

🌳 The life cycle of Tōtara spans SEVERAL centuries, with some trees living more than 1,000 years. It produces cones and its seeds are dispersed by birds. Totara plays an essential role in forest regeneration.

Why does KWTAT replant Tōtara in our mahi?
🌳 Riparian planting greatly benefits from Tōtara. Its long taproot helps stabilize stream banks and prevent erosion. The tree also provides shade, creating a cooler microclimate for aquatic life.

Ngā mihi!

Yesterday we were back at the Cowhoof farm but this time we had some awhi from the enthusiastic Rangatahi of Pakaraka Primary School. A special shoutout goes to Farmer Ester for her generous access and proactive support ✨🌿

Awesome efforts to the team and tamariki, we were able to plant one thousand tipu rakau, including the Ti Kouka and the Harakeke/Korari. These plantings play a significant role in restoring and preserving our precious riparian areas.

This collaborative effort exemplifies the power of community engagement and environmental awareness. The Pakaraka Primary School students have gained valuable knowledge and experience about the importance of environmental stewardship in safeguarding our natural resources.

Together, let's continue nurturing our environment and inspire others to do the same.

Te tipu rākau o te wiki!

TE HARAKEKE

🌿 a versatile flax native plant found throughout Aotearoa. It has long, taiaha-shaped tipped leaves that make it easily recognisable.
🌿 Harakeke has a interesting life cycle. It produces beautiful flowers on long stalks, which are pollinated by our native manu. The plant plays a crucial role in the ecosystem by providing nectar for birds and insects.
🌿 Harakeke is vital for riparian planting. Its extensive root system helps stabilize riverbanks and prevent erosion. Additionally, it acts as a natural filter, reducing sediment runoff and improving water quality!

He aha ta matau mahi o KWTAT?
Last Friday we attended the launch of Te Kete Hononga at beautiful Manea Opononi - a kaupapa launched by Reconnecing Northland. We are very thankful for our involvement as it will provide connections to tohu that will train our team, whanau and rangatahi that move through Ko Waitangi te Awa Trust. Ngā mihi Recconecting Northland and ngā mihi to the haukainga at Manea.

Te Harakeke serves as a symbol for weaving and binding. Metaphorically, it represents the act of establishing and nurturing relationships, networking, and seizing opportunities. This concept is further exemplified through the introduction of Te Kete Hononga, a new initiative that brings people together with the knowledge needed to progress.

Kia pai to wiki e te iwi! KWTAT.

KWTAT Wēnerei update:

The first of five training sessions for KWTAT is now complete in collaboration with Whitebait Connection. Our main objective is to further our understanding of assessing the health of fresh water-ways through SHMAK tests 🌿

Eagar to learn and committed to exchanging knowledge and ideas, the discoveries we made about the well-being of our river left us even more inspired and determined ✊🏼

Huge ngā mihi to Whitebait Connection for their expertise and unwavering commitment to environmental conservation - working together, we're playing our parts in safeguarding the vitality of our awa 💚🌍✨

TE MAHI O TE RĀ - NGĀ TIPU RĀKAU O WHAKATAHA

🌿 He aha te rākau o te rā?

MĀNAKUA/KAHIKĀTOA

🌱 Today we want to share kōrero about rākau grown within our nursery on Whakataha road. Te Mānuka/Kahikatea is known for their white or pink flowers and honey; once matured it will take 2-5 years to bloom 🌸
Grown not only for the medicinal benefits of the honey but also the bark/oil; Mānuka/Kahikātoa is extremely valued by Māori whānau and is now recognised internationally for similar benefits.

Why do WE grow/replant this rākau?

🌿 The rākau play a vital role in riparian planting, which is why they're often used in this context. Their deep root systems help prevent soil erosion, stabilise riverbanks, and filter out pollutants from water sources. They also provide shade and habitat for various species.

Ko Waitangi te Awa Trust priortise growing only native rākau at our Whakataha Nursery.
