31 August 1824 - Rev. Henry Williams & co. lay the keel for the CMS Herald ship.

It was on this day in 1824, on the shore of Taiputuputu beach in front of the Paihia Mission, European and Māori workers lay the keel for what was to be known as the first ship built in Aotearoa New Zealand, the Herald ship. Built on the authority of Revd. Samual Marsden utilising plans drawn up by William Hall, the Herald ship was a 55-ton schooner which became a vital supply link for the CMS. Revd. Henry Williams would have a big role in race relations, religious education, and Te Tiriti 1840.

This image of the launching of the Herald, is copied from an 1826 sketch by Marianne Williams (nee Coldham), the wife of Rev. Henry Williams. The image perspective is looking north, from the south end of the bay, toward present day Paihia and shows the Herald at berth, accompanied by several Māori waka taua & waka tētē.

Final week of the Saving Souls exhibition at Waitangi Treaty Grounds!

This is the final week of our temporary exhibition 'Saving Souls' - its closing date being Sunday, May 7th. Bring the whānau along to take one last look through the Williams' family history and all they have contributed to the Aotearoa we know today.

The exhibition, From ‘Saving Souls’ to Te Tiriti o Waitangi seeks to understand the motivations, obstacles, and legacy of the Church Missionary Society’s (CMS) local impact in the lead up to the 200th anniversary of the founding of the Paihia Mission. Through taonga and keepsakes passed down through generations of descendants, the exhibition delves into a period of our history characterised by rapid change and conflict.

Kororāreka, meaning sweet penguin. The name originated after an ailing Maori chief was fed some penguin broth to give him strength. Be amazing to see the name restored ❤️

A final decision is likely to be made this year.

The weather wasn’t on our side to bring the R Tucker Thompson and waka down as far as Paihia on Friday. Safety became a concern for the paddlers as the wind picked up. It looks fine in the photos but they were bouncing! We apologise for the disappointment and are looking to other events later in the year when we may be able to include the spectacular waka display ❤️

Some highlights from our weekend included community participation in the waka training and display, with public joining the paddlers in the morning for practise drills. The attendance at our commemorations by MP for Te Tai Tokerau and Minister for Maori Crown Relations, the Hon Kelvin Davis was greatly appreciated!

What a beautiful day to set up for the Paihia200 Festival tomorrow on the Village Green! The event is packed with delicious kai, local arts and crafts, kapa haka and waiata! All kicking off at 12noon, and the waka and R Tucker Thompson re-enactment will be at Paihia waterfront around 2.30pm but come early in case they paddle fast from Waitangi! Lots to see and do at the Village Green and we will announce from stage when the waka are on the way. Excited 😆
