31 August 1824 - Rev. Henry Williams & co. lay the keel for the CMS Herald ship.
It was on this day in 1824, on the shore of Taiputuputu beach in front of the Paihia Mission, European and Māori workers lay the keel for what was to be known as the first ship built in Aotearoa New Zealand, the Herald ship. Built on the authority of Revd. Samual Marsden utilising plans drawn up by William Hall, the Herald ship was a 55-ton schooner which became a vital supply link for the CMS. Revd. Henry Williams would have a big role in race relations, religious education, and Te Tiriti 1840.
This image of the launching of the Herald, is copied from an 1826 sketch by Marianne Williams (nee Coldham), the wife of Rev. Henry Williams. The image perspective is looking north, from the south end of the bay, toward present day Paihia and shows the Herald at berth, accompanied by several Māori waka taua & waka tētē.
