A huge thank you to (Jim) for making the trip down to Palmerston North from Auckland and sharing his knowledge, skills, and passion for carving with our Pasifika community. It was an incredible opportunity for our people to learn, connect, and gain a deeper appreciation for the art and cultural significance of carving.

We would also like to extend our sincere gratitude to the Palmerston North City Council for funding this workshop and making it possible. Your support allows us to create meaningful opportunities for our community to learn, grow, and celebrate our cultures together.

With it being Samoan Language Week, this workshop was especially significant, providing a space to embrace our heritage, strengthen cultural connections, and pass on valuable knowledge to the next generation.

Fa’afetai tele lava to everyone who attended and supported this kaupapa. We look forward to continuing to create opportunities that empower our Pasifika communities through culture, learning, and connection.

To celebrate Samoan Language Week, we are honoured to bring Jim Stretton from JS Carvings to Palmerston North to deliver one of his Carving Wellbeing Workshops!😎

This carving wellbeing workshop is being made available for members of the community as an opportunity to understand the importance of our indigenous culture and the value in retaining these practices for our wellbeing. It’s also an opportunity to learn some of the foundations of how our people would carve, along with some of the stories and meanings that come through the patterns and designs as well. 👏👏🏽

We are taking registrations for the workshop as we can only take a maximum of 30 people and given the tools that are used, we can only accept people aged 14 years and above due to health and safety requirements.

Noaʻia and Happy Rotuma Language Week 2026. 🌺
This year’s theme, “Ȧf'ȧk, putua, a'pumuạ'ȧk ma rak'ȧk 'os fäega ma 'os ag fak Rotuma, la se maoen 'e 'os tore” — Treasure, nurture, and teach our Rotuman language and culture so it may live on through generations — reminds us of the importance of preserving and passing on our heritage.
We are privileged to have our very own Rotuman Registered Nurse, Harieta Erasito, here at Niuvaka Trust, providing valuable education about Rotuma and sharing a wonderful meal with us.
We extend our sincere appreciation to Harieta and her husband, Ieli, for their meaningful contribution to celebrating and promoting the Rotuman language and culture, as well as to our guest for joining us on this special occasion.
