Following the Flag Raising Ceremony on 11 May, a series of exhibitions were held across campus over three weeks to celebrate IPU NZ’s Foundation Day. 🎊✨

The exhibitions included a history of some of IPU NZ’s facilities and a collection of yearbooks in the Library; photos of current staff from around the time IPU NZ (formerly IPC) was founded, displayed in the Admin Foyer; and a slideshow by the Rec Centre featuring past events and activities, along with the history of Kodama, the IPU Japanese Drum Team.

In addition to these exhibitions, a special lunch was offered in the Dining Hall to mark the occasion. Students and staff enjoyed a New Zealand–Japanese-themed menu, celebrating the unique identity of IPU NZ as a Japanese-founded institution where people from around the world come together in New Zealand to learn, grow, and gain broader global perspectives. 🌏💡

This collaborative project was made possible through the efforts of representatives from each department, including the IPU Student Committee.

From then to now, thank you to everyone who has contributed to IPU NZ’s establishment and evolution since 1990. Here's to celebrating our history, cherishing our community, and looking forward to the future together. 🎉🇯🇵🇳🇿

Celebrating International Dance Day: A Journey through Soran and Papua

On International Dance Day, our campus came alive with the vibrant rhythms and storytelling of Japan and Indonesia. Participants were treated to an immersive experience, diving into two distinct 1-hour workshops featuring the energetic Soran Dance and the soulful Papuan Dance.🇯🇵🇮🇩

The atmosphere was one of pure joy and focused learning. It was heartening to see students and staff alike embracing the movements, with everyone progressing remarkably well within the sessions. The workshop proved to be more than just a dance lesson; it was a beautiful exchange of cultural heritage and community spirit.

A massive thank you goes to the Recreation Centre Team and Student Support for their coordination and for making this event possible. We also extend our deepest gratitude to our talented instructors (Rei, Delya, Jeni, Melan, and Pauline) for sharing their expertise and passion with us all.✨📣

Last week, we had the privilege of exhibiting for another year at the NZ Careers Expo here in Palmerston North. Furthermore, this year we decided to hit the road and visit other cities including beautiful Whanganui and sunny Napier.

Once again we had a great mix of students and staff, both working together to showcase what IPU New Zealand is all about. From all the study opportunities that we offer, through to our unique multicultural environment, many people stopped by to chat and ask questions regarding our courses, scholarships, and our upcoming Campus Open Day happening this June.

Our road trip isn't over yet, though! We are heading to Auckland next, followed by Wellington for the upcoming Careers Expos. So if you're in the area, please pop in to say hello—we'd love to meet you! 👋✨

The past year has been a special one for IPU NZ student Kosuke Tanigawa. After arriving on our shores from IPU Japan in July 2025 for our one-year exchange programme, Kosuke quickly adapted to New Zealand life—making friends and joining sports activities, including the IPU Pickleball Club and the Ethkick Football Tournament, to name a few.

To add to his extracurricular activities, back in April at the start of NZ’s hockey season, Kosuke trialed out for High School Hockey Club and was chosen for the Men’s A team (top division)—no small feat by any means!

From the get-go, Kosuke was quickly welcomed by his fellow teammates, getting stuck in with significant game-time and making valuable contributions to the long-standing club. This was also solidified with a well-deserved MVP award after their hard-fought win against Massey Premier Men's, earlier in the season.

His impressive year was also acknowledged by Palmerston North City Mayor Grant Smith, as seen in this special personal meet-and-greet photo at the Palmerston North City Council last Wednesday.

Furthermore, the HSHC Men's A team is doing very well this year and going from strength to strength. We are only halfway through the main season, and their team is currently holding a fantastic 2nd place on the Manawatū Club ladder.

Kosuke and the boys are back in action this Saturday at 12 noon at the Hockey Manawatū Twin Turfs. Let’s go cheer them on for this weekend's clash and keep the momentum rolling for the rest of the season. Hope to see you there! 🏑🇳🇿
