Very robust but enjoyable meeting with Concerned Ratepayers in Waikanae today. The Mayor, Janet Holborow - Mayor of Kāpiti, Liz Koh - Kapiti District Wide Councillor and I updated the room on how this Long Term Plan will be different. The mayor talked about the amalgamation debate, Liz - the policy committee working on the Annual Plan, and I outlined how we intend to engage with 'pre consultation'. Something that didn't occur with the last council and has the potential to really shape the outcome for our region.

The reality is it is no longer business as usual, and we know rate rises are unaffordable and too high. How, we as a council prioritise, must be informed by you, and to do that we're engaging in pre-consultation.

This meeting provided a preview of how we intend to do that, and we received some very helpful feedback. I'll update everyone in the near future.

A strange thing occurred in the community with reports that KCDC had shut down the Kite Man. Councillor Glen Cooper has looked into this and here's his post. Great work Coops.

Kite Busking - Fact Check. As I said I would I have spoken to the C.E and have email from Group Manager Customer and Community re KCDC being the kite police at Paraparaumu Beach. I can confirm KCDC have NOT banned or prohibited the Kite man flying his kites. He has been told it is NOT a council concern the health and safety of his kites are for him to manage. Glen Cooper KCDC Paraparaumu Ward Councillor.

CYCLONE VAIANU - FINAL UPDATE 8:42pm Monday 13 April

All warnings for the region have now been cancelled or expired

Enjoy your day, WREMO Duty Team
____________________________________________________________________
All Warnings for the Wellington Region have now been cancelled.
There is still a Heavy Swell Warning and a Strong Wind Watch for WAIRARAPA in place - both until early Monday morning, but we do seem to have missed most of the impacts from the cyclone.
Have a good evening, WREMO Duty Team 😊

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Update 2:24 pm 12/04/26
Heavy Swell Warning for WAIRARAPA
Met service has issued a heavy swell warning for Cape Palliser (Lighthouse) to Mataikona from noon Sun 12th - 3am Mon, 13th Apr

Northeast combined waves reaching 4m metres, rising to5-5.5m by Sunday afternoon, easing below warning criteria overnight Sunday. The main risk period is during the late evening Sunday, as there is low pressure from Cyclone Vaianu, with a high tide expected just after midnight.

These swells could bring debris and surface flooding to roads, especially around high tide.
- Take care walking or driving along roads exposed to the sea during this time.
- Surfers, divers, recreational reef fishers/surfcasters should be extra cautious and avoid exposed locations.
- If you are planning on heading out into the water, check the marine forecast before you do, and if in doubt, do not go.

The highest risk period is typically at or within 1-2 hours of high tide.
Cape Palliser Tide Times:
High tides: 12:31pm (Sun) 12:53am (Mon)

Castle Point Tide Times:
High tides: 12:52pm (Sun) 1:17am (Mon)

9:11am 10/04/25
The Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre at MetService is keeping a close eye on Cyclone Vaianu as it makes its way towards New Zealand.
At this stage, there are NO warnings for the Wellington Region, however, we do expect it to be wet and windy over the weekend at the very least. There is a yellow wind watch in place for the whole region that may change to a warning over the next 1-2 days. Find out more about watches and warnings here: https://about.metservice.com/about-severe-weather-warnings

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO PREPARE
👉Secure any outdoor items like wheelie bins, trampolines, and outdoor furniture that could blow around.
👉With the kids on holiday, check they haven't left things lying around outside
👉Clear leaves out of gutters and away from drains - this will help reduce potential flooding if there's rain
👉Check on any family, friends, or neighbours who might need a hand securing items

Keep an eye on the MetService website for the latest information - if warnings are issued for the region, we will post them here.
Take care, WREMO Duty Team
