Update 2:24 pm 12/04/26
Heavy Swell Warning for WAIRARAPA
Met service has issued a heavy swell warning for Cape Palliser (Lighthouse) to Mataikona from noon Sun 12th - 3am Mon, 13th Apr
Northeast combined waves reaching 4m metres, rising to5-5.5m by Sunday afternoon, easing below warning criteria overnight Sunday. The main risk period is during the late evening Sunday, as there is low pressure from Cyclone Vaianu, with a high tide expected just after midnight.
These swells could bring debris and surface flooding to roads, especially around high tide.
- Take care walking or driving along roads exposed to the sea during this time.
- Surfers, divers, recreational reef fishers/surfcasters should be extra cautious and avoid exposed locations.
- If you are planning on heading out into the water, check the marine forecast before you do, and if in doubt, do not go.
The highest risk period is typically at or within 1-2 hours of high tide.
Cape Palliser Tide Times:
High tides: 12:31pm (Sun) 12:53am (Mon)
Castle Point Tide Times:
High tides: 12:52pm (Sun) 1:17am (Mon)

The Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre at MetService is keeping a close eye on Cyclone Vaianu as it makes its way towards New Zealand.
At this stage, there are NO warnings for the Wellington Region, however, we do expect it to be wet and windy over the weekend at the very least. There is a yellow wind watch in place for the whole region that may change to a warning over the next 1-2 days. WHAT YOU CAN DO TO PREPARE
👉Secure any outdoor items like wheelie bins, trampolines, and outdoor furniture that could blow around.
👉With the kids on holiday, check they haven't left things lying around outside
👉Clear leaves out of gutters and away from drains - this will help reduce potential flooding if there's rain
👉Check on any family, friends, or neighbours who might need a hand securing items
Keep an eye on the MetService website for the latest information - if warnings are issued for the region, we will post them here.
Take care, WREMO Duty Team
