👩‍🚒🚒 Throwback Thursday 👩‍🚒🚒

Before our station was full of appliances, radios and modern firefighting equipment, it was a building site and a group of people willing to roll up their sleeves.

This photo, taken in 1971, captures the construction of the Patumahoe Fire Station. The names of those involved are recorded right there in the photo, a small reminder of the people who helped build something that would become an important part of our community.

More than 50 years later, it’s pretty special to look back at where it all began.

Is your property ready for summer?

Summer might still feel a little way off, but now is the time to have a look around your property.

With a very strong El Niño expected to influence our weather this spring and summer, conditions could bring more wind, dry spells and an increased fire risk.

A few simple things you can do now:

🔥 Clear dry vegetation and rubbish away from buildings
🌿 Keep grass and vegetation around your home well maintained
🪵 Store firewood and other flammable materials away from the house
💧 Make sure hoses and outdoor taps are accessible and working
🚒 Ensure your property can be easily accessed in an emergency

A little preparation now could make a big difference later.

🚒 Behind the Helmet | 90 Seconds 👩‍🚒

90 seconds. That’s the standard.

Every member of our brigade needs to be able to arrive at an incident, get into their breathing apparatus, complete the full start-up procedure and be ready to enter a building within 90 seconds.

Why?

Because sometimes seconds count!

If we’re called to a structure fire, we need to know that every firefighter can arrive on scene and be ready to go inside, search and rescue, and potentially bring someone out in the shortest possible time.

This isn’t something you learn once and tick off a list. It starts during recruit training and continues throughout your firefighting career, no matter your rank.

Train until the process becomes automatic. Because when those 90 seconds matter, you don’t want to be learning. You want to be ready.

Long before modern appliances and all the technology we have today, there were the people who laid the foundations.

This week we head back to the early days of the Patumahoe Volunteer Fire Brigade, with three of our foundation members standing proudly beside the Pukekohe Fire Board’s vintage Ford V8.

A great snapshot of a different era of firefighting, when the equipment was simpler but the commitment to the community was every bit as strong.

Some things change. Some things don’t.

Could You Find Your Way Out?

If your house was filling with smoke at 2am, could you find your way out?

You might think you know your home like the back of your hand. But add darkness, smoke and panic, and things can become very different, very quickly.

🔥 Know at least two ways out of every room where possible.
🚪 Keep exits and doors clear.
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Make sure everyone in the house knows the escape plan.
📍 Have a meeting point outside, well away from the house.
🚒 And most importantly, once you’re out, stay out.

Don’t wait for a fire to teach you the way out.

Take a few minutes tonight and walk through your escape plan with the family.

Because when the smoke alarm sounds, it’s not the time to start figuring out what to do.

👩‍🚒 Behind the Helmet 👩‍🚒

When most people think of the Fire Brigade, they think fires, crashes and medical calls.

But the reality is, the job can take us into some pretty unexpected situations.

This is a look back at a larger animal rescue involving a horse. These rescues can be challenging, technical and require a completely different approach from a standard emergency call.

It’s about understanding the situation, working out what’s safest for the animal, the people involved and our own crew, then working together to get the job done.

And the best part? The horse survived and, after all that excitement, enjoyed a very well deserved wash down! 💦

Because being a firefighter isn’t just about putting out fires.

Sometimes it’s about getting a horse out of a difficult situation. Sometimes it’s a tree, a trapped animal, a flooded property or another problem that requires a little more thought, equipment and teamwork.

Every call is different. Every rescue brings its own challenges.

🔥 Throwback Thursday
The Patumahoe Hotel fire in 1995

Some photographs don’t just show an old fire. They tell a story about a place, a community, and a moment in time that people still remember.

This week we’re heading back to Wednesday, 13 September 1995, when fire broke out upstairs at the hotel at around 9:25am.

The fire caused extensive damage to the upstairs area, with significant water damage also occurring in the Public Bar and Kitchen. And in a reminder of just how different things could be back then, the story goes that after a rapid clean-up by management and staff, drinks were flowing again by 1pm!

The photographs give us a real glimpse into firefighting of the time, with firefighters working through heavy fire and smoke while our D-Series Ford and Pukekohe International appliances are situated outside the hotel.

For those who remember this fire, or were around the area at the time, we’d love to hear your memories.

Throwback Thursday. Because behind every old photograph, there’s usually a story worth remembering. 🚒

🔥 WEDNESDAY FIRE SAFETY TIP 🚒
WHAT’S HIDING IN YOUR SHED?

Your shed might be full of useful things.

The mower that keeps the lawns under control.
The chainsaw that gets the firewood sorted.
The petrol for the weekend jobs.
The paint you were definitely going to use three years ago.
The LPG bottle.
The batteries.
The oily rags.
And approximately 47 other things that you couldn’t possibly throw away because, “I’ll need that one day.” 😉

But here’s the problem.

A shed or garage can very quickly become a collection of fuel, chemicals, batteries and other combustible materials, all sitting together in one relatively small space.

And if something goes wrong, fire doesn’t particularly care how neatly you’ve labelled the shelves.

A few simple things can make a big difference:

• Store petrol and other flammable liquids in suitable, sealed containers.

• Keep LPG cylinders upright and stored safely in a well ventilated area away from ignition sources.

• Keep fuels, solvents and chemicals away from heaters, sparks and electrical equipment.

• Don’t leave oily rags lying around. Store or dispose of them safely.

• Keep battery chargers and electrical equipment in good condition and don’t cover them while charging.

• Give your shed a clean out from time to time. A little organisation can remove a surprising amount of fire risk.

And perhaps most importantly…

Know what’s in your shed before you need to know what’s burning in it.

A few minutes spent looking around today could save a whole lot of trouble tomorrow.

Stay safe. Stay prepared.
