📚 After nearly 40 years, we welcome the PETONE LIBRARY back to Jackson Street :D
The Petone Neighbourhood Hub + NZ Post services are now at 284 Jackson St (corner of Jackson & Queen Streets), in what was, for many years, the former Westpac Bank building.

❓ DID YOU KNOW...the Petone Library used to be on the corner of Jackson & Bay Streets underneath the Petone Borough Council (PBC) offices?

The stunning building, built in 1906, was sadly demolished in the 1980's as it required earthquake strengthening - the PBC could not afford it at the time.

The PBC offices and library moved into a new purpose-built building in 1986 at 7 Britannia Street. Then in 1989, the Government of the day forced Petone to amalgamate with the Lower Hutt City Council, which meant after 101 years with our own council, we became a suburb of Lower Hutt.

The building at 7 Britannia St housed the library + heritage centre. The heritage centre moved temporarily to the library within the Walter Nash Centre a couple of years ago, and the postal services moved into Britannia St not long after that.

Due to mould, leaking & other issues, the building is now closed until the Hutt City Council decide what they are going to do with it.
▶️ Note: the Petone Library is Lower Hutt's second most used library!

The Jackson Street Programme is happy to welcome the library + postal services to the JSP family 🤝 Please keep supporting the lovely staff and the services they provide :)

👑 ROYAL NAMES ON JACKSON STREET 👑

As we approach King’s Birthday weekend, have you ever noticed that several of the streets around Jackson Street are named after British Royal Family?

📍 Queen Street & Victoria Street: both connect to Queen Victoria, who reigned from 1837 to 1901 during much of New Zealand’s early colonial development.
📍 Regent Street: named in reference to the Prince Regent, who later became King George IV.
📍 King Street: the exact origin is less certain, but given the timing of its naming, it may refer to King Edward VII, or reflect the wider monarchical naming pattern used in the area.

These street names were laid out during the 19th century, when it was common for new settlements throughout New Zealand to honour members of the Royal Family and other important British figures.

Today, they remain a fascinating reminder of Petone’s early history and the influences that helped shape our community.

Can you think of any other similarly named streets in Petone?
Let us know about them!
