Week 7 for Year 5-6

This weeks focus is Intercepts

Objective:

To provide players with the opportunity to practise intercepting, and landing in an SBP in control and pass.

To develop team cohesion and the ability to work together on through-court defence.

Coaching points:

- Start in a stable body position
- Body angled slightly to sight ball and opponent
- Read the passing options and the cues that the passer sends out
- Anticipate the direction of the pass
- Quick footwork
- Focus on the ball
- Use outside arm if coming around an attacking player
- Land on outside leg and quickly balance up
- Quick recovery if attempt unsuccessful

Skills Errors:

-Misreading the cues
-Moving too early
-Body angle too flat
-Head down
-Shut eyes as they come close to the ball
-Lunge/Take a big step
-Inability to land balanced
-Using inside arm causing contact

Week 7 for Year 3-4

This weeks focus is Shooting

3 key points to make:
- ensure the ball is above the head
- bend the knees
- 'show us your diamonds' once the ball has left your hand

Objective:

To continue to assist the development of accurate and confident shooting technique.

Coaching Points

Ball is held above the head in the dominant hand, the other hand supports the ball
Stand tall with feet shoulder-width apart
Eyes looking at the goal
Dominant arm by ear
Elbows and knees bend to set up shot
Hand drops while arm (shoulder to elbow) remains in position
Straighten body in a sequential movement –legs then arm and hand
Follow through with hands/wrist

Errors

Ball held and released at chest height
Feet too close together
Eyes looking at ball not goal
Two hands behind the ball
Not enough knee bend
Movement not sequential
No follow through
Non-dominant hand used in shot

Week 7 for Year 1-2

This weeks focus is Jumping and Landing

Objective

To develop the ability to jump and land balanced in a stable body
position (SBP) as players jump for intercepts and also to catch high
passes. During game time, focus on landing balanced, either on one
foot or both feet.

Coaching Points

Head upright
Shoulders level, trunk strong
Feet shoulder–width apart
Bend at hips (like sitting in a chair)
Bend at knees
Knees in line with feet and not in front of toes
Use both arms to drive up and extend towards the ball
Land, cushioning your landing by bending at knees, hips and ankles

Errors

Feet close together
Knees not in line with toes
Legs straight before the jump
Body leaning forward
Arms not fully extended
Timing of jump
