When Cara-lee welcomed her third baby, exhaustion was taking a serious toll. Her newborn's reflux and dairy intolerance meant broken sleep night after night, and with tiredness came real safe sleep risks. Returning to Plunket felt like coming home - and it was her Plunket nurse who made all the difference, introducing Cara-lee to the pēpi pod and safe sleep guidance she calls a "game changer".

"There were times I needed advice, times I just needed to vent, and times I simply needed to cry. My Plunket nurse supported me through all of it without judgement. She listened, reassured me, and helped me find solutions."

Those quiet moments with pēpi…they’re shared across whānau.

Keeping pēpi safe while they sleep isn’t just one person’s role. It’s something we all do, together.

From placing pēpi on their back in their own sleep space, keeping their sleep space clear, every small action helps protect them.

Safe sleep is a shared responsibility

Infant capsule covers are useful for protecting pēpi from the elements while you’re walking to and from the car, but they need to come off in the car.

These covers limit your ability to observe baby while driving, and restrict the air flow around them which can make pēpi overheat – especially in warmer weather, or when we have heaters on to keep warm.

Those quiet winter nights… all you want is for your pēpi to be safe and settled.

Face up, face clear.

Placing your pēpi on their back in their own flat, firm bed helps protect their breathing and keep them safe.

It’s a small act of aroha that goes a long way.

Back to sleep, every sleep.

We want to keep our tamariki warm in winter – but big puffy jackets, snow suits or other bulky layers are unsafe to use in child restraints. The harness needs to be as close as possible to your child’s body to be effective in a crash and layers compress, making the harness loose.

Take jackets or other outer layers off before buckling your tamariki in. You can put a blanket over the top of the harness to keep pēpi warm, or for older tamariki you can pop their jacket on backwards over the top while they’re in the car.

In winter, we spend more time indoors with our pēpi.

Keeping your home smokefree helps protect their breathing and keeps them well.

Today, and everyday, let's create smokefree spaces for pēpi.
