This photo marks an important moment in the development of Te Taumata - taken during the early stages of our cultural restoration and infrastructure planning. Since then, substantial progress has been made to strengthen the site, protect the whenua, and prepare for meaningful visitor engagement.
Over recent years, our team has advanced key projects including environmental restoration, track development, cultural storytelling frameworks, and the protection of Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu… the world’s longest place name and a treasured taonga of our hapū. These initiatives have laid a strong foundation for responsible, culturally aligned tourism.
We are pleased to confirm that Te Taumata Tours are now in preparation, with guided experiences scheduled to launch during the warmer months ahead. These tours will offer visitors an authentic connection to the landscape, the history of Tamatea, and the cultural significance of this wāhi tapu - delivered with a focus on safety, environmental care, and mana‑enhancing storytelling.
