Kia ora Porirua, we’ve got some big conversations coming up with our communities and our neighbouring councils about possible council amalgamation.

This work is at an early stage but we want to make sure the interests, needs and voices of the people of Porirua are front and centre. We invite you to share your views on amalgamation and what’s most important to you.

Unfortunately our splash pad is out of action for the rest of this week as it needs a new part. The weather's a little brisk for splash pad use, but apologies still for the inconvenience. 🛠️

Good news for the youngest members of our community - we are making some upgrades to both the Waihemo St playground in Waitangirua and the Aotea Lagoon playground this month 🛝🤸‍♀️🙌

Work is scheduled to begin on the Aotea Lagoon playground on Monday 15 June and run for 2-4 weeks. As part of the project, the existing spinner will be replaced with a basket swing, and the ageing Rocotopus play structure will be removed and replaced with an exciting new play feature. All safety surfacing within the work area will also be renewed.

Work is scheduled to start on the Waihemo St playground on Monday 22 of June and run for 2-4 weeks. During the upgrade, the existing playground will be removed, with any suitable components repurposed. The new playground will include a tower play structure with slide, innovative play equipment, a new nature play area, and additional planting to refresh the space

Be in to WIN a native plant, thanks to our Porirua City Council Nursery!

Today is Arbor Day, a great opportunity to recognise just how valuable trees are, and the important role they play in making our communities healthier, greener, and more enjoyable places to live 💚

When we think about trees, we often picture forests, reserves and parks, but some of the most important trees in our communities are actually along our streets, and throughout our city centre. Eamon, our Manager Arboriculture, says:

"Trees do far more than simply make our streets look nice - although they do that, too! They also help cool our city, improve air quality by filtering pollutants from the air and absorbing carbon dioxide, and at the same time, they support local wildlife by providing shelter and food for native birds and insects."

There are also strong links between trees and wellbeing.

To celebrate Arbor Day, we have five native plants to give away, thanks to our Porirua City Council Nursery! To be in to WIN, tell us your favourite native tree in the comments.

Our five lucky winners will be drawn on Monday, so get commenting now to be in the draw 👇

We're happy to report that after factoring in QV's new property valuations our average council rates increase is now projected to be zero, down from the 4 per cent increase that was previously forecast.

Rates for the 2026/27 year will also have the charges for water removed, which will see around 30 per cent come off bills, on average.

Figures are not finalised yet, but on current estimates the total weekly combined bills for Porirua residential households for council rates, Tiaki Wai water charges, and Greater Wellington Regional Council rates are estimated to increase on average around $228 per year, which is $4 per week.

Mayor Anita Baker said it was a great result to have been able to avoid any rate increases for the average existing residential ratepayer, at a time when communities were facing financial pressure.

"We’ve worked really hard to reduce costs wherever we can. We had predicted we would need to increase non-water rates but to now be able to land on a zero increase is a win for our communities at a time when everyone is feeling the pinch.

"I’m proud of the effort the council has made to reduce the burden on ratepayers. And we’ve achieved this zero increase without cutting services and without reducing maintenance work. We are continuing to invest in the things that keep our city running and support the quality of life people expect."
