Hi fellow book lover,

It's Vinny, founder of 1000 Libraries. It's late here and I can't sleep.

I went down a rabbit hole tonight: a century of people announcing the death of the book.

1913: Thomas Edison: "Books will soon be obsolete in the public schools."

1972: Marshall McLuhan: "Books are becoming obsolete."

2008: Steve Jobs: "The fact is that people don't read anymore."

2012: Philip Roth: "the screen will kill the reader, and it has."

And this year, in The Atlantic, the literate era is "a brief interlude between the oral and digital ages."

Every new screen was supposed to finish it off.

Meanwhile: Americans bought 762 million print books last year, and 422 new bookshops opened. In Britain, fiction had its best year since records began. Here in Australia, sales grew for the first time since 2022. And wherever else you're reading this, the pattern likely holds: book sales grew in eleven of the nineteen markets tracked worldwide.

Reading isn't dying. It keeps getting written off by people who mistake their own habits for everybody else's.

So the next time someone says "you still read books? in 2026?", smile. You're part of a very stubborn, very special breed, and the numbers are on your side.

Book Week Winners: A huge thankyou to all the readers, staff and students who participated. Long live Lord of the Rings, adventures and reading. There were some very creative book characters around: 1st Jem Roxborgh, 2nd Jenni Howells, 3rd Kelia Buckland. Good to see some new competitors in Speed Reading- after some judge discussion Harrison O'Reibow has been awarded 1st, Ryan Kroupa special prize, Rose Baillie 2nd, Eleanor Cornforth 3rd. And staff department costume prize 1st Social Sciences, 2nd English. Winners receive Paper Plus vouchers and Certificates- in Assembly. Congratulations everyone

Thanks everyone for getting involved in Book Week and supporting reading. Lord of the Rings and adventurous events. Stepping outside your comfort zone to compete in the speed reading or LOR competition or create a book character costume...

​Unfortunately Sam can no longer speak on Tuesday to classes at Motueka High and Nayland.

Sam has been in touch with Read NZ to offer a talk later this year for those schools (Nayland, Motueka) who missed out. Watch this space.

Meantime I understand the free Shedwood Hall, Tapawera event still has space available. Please recommend the Tapawera event to students and whanau. This will be an interesting talk with some hands on activities. Best to register for this. See the poster for contact details.

And for those who registered to attend Te whare Taikura o te Maatu enjoy your Sunday evening. Te whare Taikura is fully booked.
