On my way to the SS4C Rally on 5 April.

Disappointed with the rally. It felt like the climate came third, after Palestine and ti Tiriti.

Climate change is real, and it demands a broad, consensus approach. That won't come from the SS4C leadership, despite its good intentions.

We almost need a social contract in climate action, by which the whole population feels committed to actions that benefit all of us, and our Pacific neighbours. This may arise from dire necessity (perhaps from world economic or financial collapse) or it may grow out of democratic processes, including Citizens Assemblies .

James Shaw's greatest achievement was gaining cross party support for Zero Carbon. Luxon is still formality keeping that target. Any further progress we make on climate action will be made by consensus or it will be short lived.

So, where to from here?

I'll be working within Labour to promote this approach. Keen to hear from others with similar plans....

We should be talking about climate. Instead, the world is wracked by warfare. Solutions are needed. Perhaps they are more easily found than we think? Here's a solution to Palestine. Maybe it's the only possible one?

A mass prisoner release would seem like a PR win for Hamas, but it’s Israel’s only route to victory, says Gershon Baskin of the International Communities Organisation NGO

Thinking of making a submission to the Climate Change Commission?

If so, do make reference to the Commission's proposals for public engagement: see Recommendation 5 of its "Advice to Government" (pages 43 and 44). Call for an earlier response date than 31 December 2022! And visit our website for more information: www.climateemergency.org.nz

The Commission noted favourably the use of Citizens Assemblies as part of public engagement in Ireland, the UK and France (the first US State to hold a Climate Citizens Assembly is Washington: its Assembly has only just convened).

The link below makes some useful comparisons between the two most recent climate assemblies, in Britain and France last year.

Climate assemblies can help unlock more effective action against climate change, but improvements are needed in how they are run.
