This beautiful juvenile North Island kōkako has been spotted several times on the switchbacks that lead down to the entrance to Te Tui a Tāne / Southern Enclosure.

The pink wattles will turn blue as this bird matures.

If you're heading into the sanctuary, look out for a bird that's bigger than a tūī but not as big as a kererū. They'll be bounding along branches or making short glides between trees rather than flying big distances.

POV: You're a kōkako and you're keen to help the ranger team out by checking some traps!

While they might not have been to any health and safety meetings, this kōkako is completely safe from any harm. These traps are modified so that they target pest species while ensuring our native taonga remain safe.
