Happy Youth Week 2026!

This year's theme is "Our voices matter! We deserve to be heard | Taringa whakarongo! Ki te reo o ngā taiohi" and we can't back this any more strongly!

Tuakau Youth Centre has an event tomorrow in the Tuakau Township - get down there and hear what our youth have to say - with special guest speaker Councillor Fabio Rodrigues and past TYC Leaders

As you are probably aware, Auckland Emergency Management (AEM) has stood up to prepare for possible impacts from Cyclone Vaianu.

It’s important that you stay informed and help others to know the latest information:

Stay up to date with the AEM website and AEM FB page.
Stay up to date with weather forecasts (MetService website) and check Auckland Transport’s and NZTA’s journey planners for any public transport and roading disruption.
Report stormwater issues and flooding to the council on 09 301 0101.
If you are in danger or there is a serious risk to your property, phone 111 – don’t wait, natural warnings like rising floodwaters need to be acted on immediately.

MetService has upgraded severe weather notices to a Heavy Rain Warning and Strong Wind Warnings for Auckland including Great Barrier Island, with a Strong Wind Warning - Red for Great Barrier Island. Please see below for details.

SITUATION
Cyclone Vaianu is expected to move southwards across the North Island on Sunday, 12 April. The current track of the cyclone can be found at https://www.metservice.com/warnings/tropical-cyclone-activity. Great Barrier Island has been upgraded to a RED warning for wind. The combination of damaging winds, heavy rain and coastal inundation makes this a multi-hazard, potentially life-threatening event. The locations of the most severe impacts associated with Cyclone Vaianu, such as power outages, falling trees, flooding, slips, road closures and isolated communities are highly dependent on the cyclone's track. Strong Wind and Heavy Rain Watches and Warnings are in force for much of the North Island and upper South Island Sunday and early Monday. Further areas are likely to be upgraded to Orange or Red as the cyclone approaches and its track becomes clearer.

STRONG WIND WARNING - RED for Great Barrier Island
Area: Great Barrier Island
Period: 13hrs from 5:00am Sun to 6:00pm Sun
Forecast: Severe gale easterlies changing to severe gale westerly Sunday afternoon, with damaging gusts of 140km/h. Note winds easing from the north during Sunday afternoon.
Impact: Threat to life from flying items and falling trees. Destructive winds will cause widespread damage including powerlines and roofs, with dangerous driving conditions and significant disruption to transport and power supply.

STRONG WIND WARNING - ORANGE for Auckland excluding Great Barrier Island
Area: Auckland
Period: 19hrs from 9:00pm Sat to 4:00pm Sun
Forecast: Severe gale easterlies changing to severe gale westerly Sunday afternoon, gusting 130km/h in exposed places.
Moderate chance of upgrading to a Red Warning.
Impact: Damage to trees, powerlines, and unsecured structures possible. Driving may bedifficult, especially for high-sided vehicles and motorcycles.

HEAVY RAIN WARNING - ORANGE for Auckland including Great Barrier Island
Area: Auckland and Great Barrier Island
Period: 12hrs from 2:00am Sun to 2:00pm Sun
Forecast: Expect 70 to 100 mm of rain to accumulate. Peak rates of 10 to 20 mm/hr. Note, heavy swells and coastal inundation likely, especially about Great Barrier Island.
Low chance of upgrading to a Red Warning.
Impact: Streams and rivers may rise rapidly. Surface flooding, slips, and difficult driving conditions possible.

We recently had the privilege of attending the launch of the Youth Insights Report for Franklin - centred on Co-Designing Our Future Youth Hub in Pukekohe that services Franklin, a partnership between Ola le Ola Aotearoa and Pukekohe Youth Leadership Council.

What was shared was a genuine commitment to rangatahi voices of Franklin, not consultation for the sake of it - meaningful, youth-led insight for the development of a much needed community asset.

A big well done to Chillion Sanerivi for MC'ing the event and Levonne Grant, whose passionate delivery of the core insights encouraged us to feel the full weight and importance of this kaupapa. Taitosaua William Peace was missed in his absence, but his passion was felt throughout the day.

We broke out into groups where the insights were shared further by the actual youth involved in the research and development of the report. Hearing directly from rangatahi, and being able to reflect ideas and offerings of support back, reinforced how important it is that this space is built with them, not just for them.

Massive credit to OLOA, PYLC, Taitosaua William Peace, and their funders Foundation North for the mahi behind this. Hearing the rangatahi share what it meant to hold the insights report in their hands was special - it's now up to us all to ensure it is actively brought to life and isn't just filed away. We, the collective Pukekohe community, have the networks and resources needed to bring this to life for Pukekohe rangatahi and we at KSS can't wait to play a part in this coming to fruition.

Thank you to The Franklin Times for covering this event that we partnered with other local organisations to deliver, the turnout really evidenced that our community is hungry for more knowledge to support our tamariki. And like Nigel said, you turned up wanting to learn how to better support your kids, so you are already doing a great job.

It's very sad to learn this morning that just over a month after this event, Nigel has passed. A mighty tōtara has fallen. We extend our condolences to Nigel's family, his friends, and his many colleagues over the years. Moe mai rā Nigel
