A small kiwi update 🥹

Over the past few weeks, our little kiwi boy has been growing steadily in the incubation room, with quick, calm health checks and weigh-ins helping the team monitor his progress along the way.

These handling moments are always kept as gentle and efficient as possible, so we can make sure he’s doing well while keeping things low-stress.

And the latest bit of news…

He has officially moved into the nocturnal Kiwi House! 🙌

He’s still quite small and settling into his new space, so guests might not be able to spot him for a wee bit, but happy to say he’s doing so well and we’ll keep you updated.

Ngā mihi 🤎

The morel of the story is…

All this biodiversity has a pretty cool story behind it.

Before Kiwi Park opened its doors 40 years ago, this area was an unofficial rubbish dump. Over the past four decades, a lot of work, care and dedication has gone into making it what it is today.

More than 20,000 native trees and shrubs have been planted across the park, turning 5 acres in the heart of Queenstown into a thriving little pocket of native habitat.

Every fern, fungi-covered log, leafy track and tiny native seedling helps create the oasis you see today.

And it’s all been made possible through donations 🤗

Which we reckon is pretty magic 🍄

Meet John.

After spending 3 months in rehabilitation at Kiwi Park, John the black-billed gull has returned to the wild.

John was found in a gutter alongside State Highway 6 by following a suspected cat attack that left him with a fractured right wing. After a quick visit to the vets, he was transferred to Kiwi Park, where our team worked to rehabilitate him.

As you can see, John made a fantastic recovery and was recently released back where he belongs at the beautiful Frankton Beach.

This release is particularly special as the black-billed gull is New Zealand's only endemic gull species and is recognised as the world's most threatened gull. With populations continuing to decline, every individual matters, making John's successful rehabilitation and release a significant conservation achievement.

As we celebrate Kiwi Park's 40th year, it's especially rewarding to mark this milestone with success stories like John's. Seeing a bird return to the wild is one of the most meaningful parts of our conservation work and a reminder of why rehabilitation plays such an important role in protecting New Zealand's wildlife.

Meet Alan! 👋

Alan joined our Guest Services Team in October 2025 and has been bringing the laughs ever since.

His favourite bird is the pūkeko.

His fun fact is that birds have something called a cloaca, which is basically an “everything exit” for their toileting and reproductive business…

I mean, how efficient is that?!

Anyway, if you see Alan around the park, feel free to say hi. Maybe don't ask him to draw your portrait or have him pronounce any Māori words…he's trying his best.

Plenty of happy tears 🥹

A very special moment from our first proper contact with baby kiwi a few weeks ago.

After spending his first wee while being looked after by dad, this baby kiwi was brought into our incubation room so our wildlife team could give him the best possible care through these early stages.

Last October, Harry was found all alone on a local trail by a caring member of the public and brought to the park for rehabilitation. At first, he was thought to be a whio duckling.

Once our team had a closer look, we realised he was actually a Paradise Shelduck, or as we like to call them, a Parry… hence the name Harry the Parry.

He was our first Paradise duckling of our rehab ducklings from 2025 summer and since then, he’s had warmth, care, snacks, and a whole lot of love from our wildlife team.

Harry might not be so little anymore, but when we look at him, we still see that wee lost duckling we first took in.
