Recently, we had a crew compete in the Canterbury Provincial Fire Brigades Association 2026 Road Crash Rescue (RCR) Challenge in Hornby, putting our skills, teamwork and problem-solving to the test.

This competition involves responding to lifelike crash scenarios, including getting access to patients, extraction, treating patients and putting our medical skills to the test. These scenarios are a great test of our skills, and they’re a vital part of making sure we’re ready when it matters most.

Our team - coached by Martin Thornley and consisting of Peter Helps (Lead), George Bright, Sam Wootton, Brent Wood, Martin Pugh and Lollie Stallard-Leen won the Time Critical Scenario and placed fourth overall - a fantastic result for their first time competing together 👏

A massive thank you to everyone involved in organising and running the event - including the patients.

Next up, the team will be travelling to Feilding to compete in the National RCR Challenge from 11-13 June. Join us in wishing them the best of luck! 💪

🚒 Callout Update – End of May 2026 🚒

Our brigade has responded to 177 callouts so far this year – currently sitting at 6 fewer than the same time in 2025.

The types of incidents we’re attending remain largely consistent, with structure fires, motor vehicle crashes, weather-related calls, and alarm activations all tracking very similar to last year.

Notable changes include:
🌿 Vegetation fires up 40% compared to 2025
🚑 Medical calls down 35% compared to 2025

A big thank you to our volunteers for their continued dedication to keeping our community safe. 💪

Over the weekend, ten of our members sweated their way up 51 floors of the sky tower, as part of the Firefighter Sky Tower Challenge (https://firefighterschallenge.org.nz/), all in the aim of fundraising for Blood Cancer NZ. Everyone made it to the top with several PBs achieved. Along the way we raised $8544 to help our fellow kiwis living with blood cancer. Well done team! 👏👏👏

Fundraising is still open if you'd like to contribute 😊 https://firefighterschallenge.org.nz/t/2026-rangiora-volunteer-fire-brigade

Our current call volume stands at 106 for the year, compared to 95 calls received during the same period in 2025. Vegetation fires and motor vehicle accidents have seen a 10% increase from last year. Alarm activations are up 45% from the previous year. Encouragingly, medical events have decreased by 15%.

Will you check your smoke alarms this daylight saving, question?

1. Check your smoke alarms are working by pressing the button. The end of a broom handle is a great help! 🧹

2. While you’re there give them a little dust, a minute of maintenance could save lives!

3. Check in on elderly whānau or neighbours. Fifty percent of avoidable deaths in house fires are people over the age of 60. This is something we can change.

It's not rocket science, do it today 🚀
