We're expecting strong winds and high temperatures over the next few days, so our local fire risk will be very high. Please don't light any outdoor fires or carry out activities that can generate sparks near vegetation.

Under these extreme conditions, any wildfire that starts is likely to spread rapidly, be very difficult to control, and have the potential to cause significant damage.

If you have lit any outdoor fires in the last 10 days, please go back and check that the fire is completely out. Don't just look at it - rake out the ashes, check for signs of heat, and douse the area in water if you're in any doubt.

Call 111 if you see any sign of smoke.

⚠️A total ban on open fires and fireworks comes into force across the whole of Mid-South Canterbury at noon today because of the gales, high temperatures and low humidity that are forecast for the next few days. This means no new fires at all, for any reason, and no fireworks. ⚠️
• We are asking every landowner, agricultural contractor, forestry manager and lifestyle block owner to help us avoid any more fires starting, or reigniting from previous burns.
• Anyone who has had an outdoor fire since the beginning of September is asked to go and check today that it is completely out. If you see any sign of heat or smoke, please act immediately to fully wet down the site. If this is not possible, call 111 so that firefighters can assist.
Yesterday’s fires showed the devastating effects that wildfires have on communities, putting lives at risk and causing significant damage. We are asking everyone to do their bit to make sure this doesn't happen anywhere else.

❗️We're in for a very windy 24 hours in our patch so please don't light any outdoor fires as they will be very hard to control and can easily escape. That includes bonfires and camp fires as well as burning your hedge trimmings or whatever else you're tidying up this long weekend.

If you've had an outdoor fire in the last couple of weeks, please go and check that it is completely out, and water it well if there is any sign of heat.

MetService New Zealand has issued an orange wind warning for our region. Please stay up to date with the forecasts and heed any warnings from Civil Defence Emergency Management Canterbury and NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi - Canterbury & West Coast.❗️
