A State of Emergency is still in place across the Wellington Region after severe weather impacted parts of Wellington City, the Hutt Valley, and Wairarapa.

Kāpiti Coast District Council update:
So far, Kāpiti hasn’t been hit as hard overnight. We’re still under a Heavy Rain Watch and Strong Wind Watch, but there are no reports of widespread damage at this stage.

Council crews are out today checking the district and assessing any impacts.

Community Board members Fiona Vining and Zelda Edwards joined the International Women’s Day breakfast hosted by Soroptimist International Kāpiti, hearing an inspiring kōrero from guest speaker Dr Fahimeh McGregor.

This year’s theme, Give to Gain, is a reminder that generosity grows opportunity. When we give our support, time and energy to women and girls, we multiply the possibilities for everyone. When women thrive, our whole community rises.

Update on blackberries in QE Park

📣UPDATE: Blackberry picking in QE Park📣
Thanks to all those who have reached out asking about whether it's safe to pick blackberries in QE Park. We have today confirmed with Greater Wellington that a total spray ban has been in place since the blackberry bushes started flowering (2 months ago). And this ban remains in place until 9 March. This means you still have 1 more week to forage away, spray free!

Prior to the spray ban, GW carried out extensive work mulching blackberry and spraying the regrowth. GW will be following up with additional spraying once the ban is lifted on Monday 9 March, as most berries have now begun to turn and the fruiting period is essentially finished. They will only be spraying mulched regrowth along the cycleway, not mature plants that may still hold some remaining berries.

Mōrena Wellington region,

Hopefully, you managed to get some sleep last night. 💤

Here’s a few things to remember as you start the day:

💨 It’s still wet, windy and wild out there. We have a number of watches and warnings in place for our region. Please check www.metservice.com for the latest information.

🏠 If possible, stay indoors and avoid any unnecessary travel. If you do need to travel, plan ahead and keep an eye out for any debris or surface flooding. The roads will be messy, so please drive to the conditions.

🚆For public transport updates, head to www.metlink.org.nz for up-to-date information.

🛣 There are some local road closures across the region. Check your local council for the most updated information on these roads.

⚡Some areas continue to experience power outages, for more information head to:
https://www.welectricity.co.nz/outages
https://outages.powerco.co.nz/
https://electra.co.nz/outages/

In the meantime, please sit tight and keep warm. We will continue to update our social media and website channels as daylight comes, and we gather more information. 🤍

NZ Post are, once again, proposing to remove our local postal services.
Their current proposal seeks to remove services from the dairies in Paekākāriki, Raumati South, and Raumati Beach, leaving residents with the option of traveling to Paraparaumu for postal services.
Mail delivery services to homes will continue as usual.

The proposed removal of postal services from Raumati Beach, Raumati South, and Paekākāriki would represent a significant loss for these communities.

The current arrangements are financially lean for NZ Post, and the value they provide locally is substantial. For many residents, these services are not a convenience but a necessity.
If the proposal proceeds, it risks leaving many community members effectively stranded.

Older residents and people with disabilities would be particularly affected, especially given the well-recognised limitations of public transport in the area.
Requiring someone in Paekākāriki or Raumati to travel to Paraparaumu by bus or train simply to post a letter presents a genuine and unreasonable barrier.

I have raised concerns directly with NZ Post and requested further information.
Our Community Boards and the local Electorate MP, Barbara Edmonds, have also been made aware of the issue.
NZ Post has indicated it will provide a response.

I trust that, on reflection, NZ Post will recognise that withdrawing these services would undermine community access and do a disservice to the residents who rely on them.
