Sophie McInnes, Selwyn District Councillor

Sophie McInnes, Selwyn District Councillor Representing Kā Mānia Rolleston and Burnham as your councillor since 2019. Ko Tauwharekākaho tōku kāinga, ko Kaikaunihera o Waikirikiri tōku mahi.

Always happy to chat - catch me out and about, or get in touch to arrange a time 👍🏼 As your councillor since 2019, I am an active, accessible point of contact via the residents’ association, at local events, in the community, and online. My family and I work, learn, play and volunteer in our district, and I’m always ready to discuss concerns with both respect and realism. Over time, I’ve served as

deputy chair of the Infrastructure & Transport committee and chair of Housing & Urban Development, supporting intergenerational initiatives like spatial planning, the Reconnect waste management project, and the Youth & Older Persons’ Hub. My commitment is reinforced by a Masters in Environmental Policy & Management from Lincoln, and Institute of Directors membership. Both are deeply relevant to making tough decisions that balance today’s needs with the challenges of population growth, environmental protection, and community resilience. In 2025-2028, I will continue to advocate for affordable, future-focused investment, and ensure that Selwyn responds effectively to government reforms.

🏃🏼‍♀️🏃🏽‍♂️ Foster parkrun (and every other parkrun in the world) can't happen without volunteers.

Pictured here we have today's run director, timekeeper, finish tokenerer, funnel manager, and barcode scanners. Behind me were the volunteer coordinator and token sorter, plus there are marshals around the track etc etc 💕

🥳 Happy National Volunteer Week, everyone - you make things happen!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

🗣 Another form of volunteering: at events! Such as today's Aotearoa Futures Forum in Ōtautahi, where the organisers and speakers were ably assisted by a crew of locals 👥

💡 The forum was a refreshing side step from the hurly-burly of local government - always full of new perspectives and different ways of thinking. Plus such a diverse bunch of folk to talk to, from a range of backgrounds ✨️

💕 Also notable for being a practitioner-led gathering for anyone interested, in a community venue, with delicious but non-fancy catering, for an affordable ticket fee - amazing insights do not need to be accompanied by whizz-bang 😅

🎯 Sports volunteers! We have so many of them here in NZ, and Selwyn is no different.

🏑 The first photo is of my son's Waikirikiri Hockey team, which is supported by a fab coach and wider crew, as well as teen referees learning their trade 💕

🫶🏼 The second is a notice I've seen in many places, reminding all that no matter how emotional we might feel about how a match is going: get real! (Same applies to adults' sport tbh..)

⛑️🚁 Natural hazards are the new normal, and emergency response volunteers are part of the planning, key to the rescues, and enable us to get to a recovery phase.

💗 Thank you NZRT-21, SEST, CRTs, and all who back you up in the Emergency Operations Centre!

🦁 Tuesday's National Volunteering Week spotlight shines upon the Lions Club of Ellesmere (part of Lions Clubs New Zealand - District 202E)!

🪺🌿🎣 Many voluntary groups dedicate their time to delivering or supporting services; these guys build amazing, intergenerational assets. As an example: Ellesmere Lions have been part of enabling public access to Waitātari Harts Creek (on Department of Conservation - Canterbury land) for decades, and are undertaking a massive project to renew the pathway, the boardwalk, and the bird hide.

Thank you, gentlemen 💕

The original Waitātari Harts Creek boardwalk and bird hide were built by the Lions Club of Ellesmere in 1993 and became a favourite destination for locals, birdwatchers, school groups and visitors from throughout New Zealand and overseas.

However, the structures recently reached the end of their usable life and were closed the Department of Conservation (DOC), and the bird hide was removed.

In response, a local working group including Lions members, community representatives, environmental groups and volunteers came together to bring the site back to life.

The Chair of the Waitātari Harts Creek Track and Bird Hide Restoration Project – and incoming Ellesmere Lions President – Dennis Carter, says the goal is not just to replace what was lost, but to create a better, more accessible experience. The estimated cost is $300,000 which will be sought through donations, grants and from philanthropic trusts.

“We’re working towards a high-quality, future-proofed structure that reconnects people with this incredibly important wetland,” Dennis says.

🌅 It's Monday morning, and I've already encountered a bunch of fabulous volunteers!

🛑 🦜 School road patrol crews working the district's many Kea crossings: we see you and we thank you!

(Start 'em young 😁👍🏼)

Did you know? Formal volunteering alone is worth $6.4 billion to the New Zealand economy. And when you factor in all volunteering? That impact more than doubles to a massive $14.4 billion!

For the statistics nerds... Volunteers provide 231 million hours of formal volunteer labour annually. At the living wage ($27.80/hour) this is valued at $6.4 billion annually.

The country could not run without volunteers! So they deserve our thanks and appreciation.

😍 National Volunteer Week is here! My aim is to highlight a different local group every day, starting with..

🎉 Selwyn Parenting Network! Not just because of our fantastically dedicated operational lead, or my amazing colleagues on the committee, but the wonderful volunteers at events like Children's Day!

🤩 Who are you thankful for, this National Volunteer Week?

National Volunteer Week 2026 kicks off today!

National Volunteer Week (NVW) is New Zealand’s largest celebration of volunteers and volunteering. This year’s theme, Your Year to Volunteer – Tōu tau ki te tūao - has been chosen to mark International Year of the Volunteer 2026.

It both recognises those who are volunteering, and prompts others to start. Volunteering strengthens the fabric of our communities, connecting individuals, whānau, and organisations across Aotearoa. Volunteers play vital roles – as coaches, caregivers, emergency responders, community builders, environmental champions, and more.

By recognising and valuing volunteers, we help foster a culture of appreciation and encourage everyone to volunteer in some way. Let’s celebrate the diversity of volunteers and the collective strength of mahi aroha and social action in our communities.
