Nature & Conservation made fun!

Get up close with all the wonderful birds, bugs and beasts who call New Zealand home, from birds that can’t fly to reptiles that walked with the dinosaurs! Set amid lush native forest and crossed by natural water streams, Rainbow Springs is a conservation nature park and the perfect place to discover nature and the most precious native animal species of Aotearoa.

We are home to the National Kiwi Hatchery, the world’s largest and most successful kiwi conservation centre. Since 1995, our husbandry team has hatched over 2,020 kiwi chicks! Stick your beak in the Kiwi Burrow, a unique interactive experience where you can stand in a human-sized kiwi burrow, sit in a giant kiwi egg, and see real kiwi in their nocturnal enclosure. Our manuhiri (visitors) also have the opportunity to join the National Kiwi Hatchery ‘Behind The Scenes’ Tour and see real conservation in action; if you are lucky you may see real kiwi eggs being incubated, a baby kiwi hatching, or a kiwi chick getting a health check-up too.

Have face-to-face with our cheeky parrots Kea and Kaka, try to spot Tuatara – the masters of camouflage, check out the giant eel & trout, experience the interactive cultural show Taonga – Treasures of New Zealand, relax at the beautiful waterfall-front picnic area, ride the Big Splash and let the kids have some fun at our many interactive Playscapes! and the large playground.

If you are all about the roads less travelled, join the Scared Spring & Plant Tour to learn more about the medicinal properties of local native plants and the Māori legends around the sacred pond where warriors dived.
